In jazz,what's a fill and what's just comping ?

I'm trying to follow the advice heard in an interview to train my ears into when to fill in a jazz tune ..."get one jazz song and, playing quarter notes on the ride, try to identify and memorise...

is there any rough guideline (some rule of thumb or common sense approach) as to how not to overplay or even when not to play in a song ...or is it just a matter of intuition and taste ?

In 90 minutes to 2 hour practice of say just grooves(of a relative complication,garibaldi style or afrocuban)...how many would you advise doing per session?

I find myself moving from one groove or fill to the next when I have mastered them (By this I dont mean committed them to memory but just being physically able to do them)... and later I remember...

well,it doesnt...and according to my band I am the loud one.it's an 18 incher hip gig with with I play relatively loud rock.should I have started by saying that?
