Re: Beginner drummer question

If I'm working up something that requires 4 way independence, I have the best luck first working on the independence between 2 limbs. For example, my right hand and my left hand. Once that's...

Re: Grateful Dead Announces ‘Unprecedented’ 80-Disc Box Set

If I ever were to buy my first Greatful Dead recording, this probably wouldn't be it. I did buy a Bobby (BobWier) and the Midnights record once, but only because Billy Cobham played the drums.

Re: Heartbeat

Now here is something I wish was true. Especially after I had the metronome (or pacemaker) installed in my chest. It helps keep my mechanical heart valve grooving at a steady tempo.

Re: Acoustic Drums VS Electronic Drum Kits

Typically apartments and acoustic drums sets aren't a match made in heaven. Unfortunately apartments tend to have neighbors. Neighbors don't like drums. Years ago, I remember living in Allston...

Re: What was the first concert you went to????

Edgar Winter's White Trash, 1971. Jerry Lacroix also on sax and vocals, Rick Derringer on guitar and Bobby Ramirez on drums (along with others in the band). I was 13.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

I've only seen the preview but plan to watch it the next few days. It just became available on directv.

The preview sure brought back memories. When I went to Berklee around 1979 - 1981, I...

Re: Wynton Marsalis: When I Joined Art Blakey's Band

I thought he sounded pretty good. :) Wynton, Branford and my Harmony I teacher from Berklee, Bill Pierce were the horn section. They all were great and Art was awesome.

This was probably...

Re: Syncopation, Dawson methods, Goal tempos?

I took from Alan for a couple of years around 1980. I don't ever remember him discussing tempo with respect to the Ted Reed exercises. He was concerned about tempo for the stick control exercises,...

Re: A Funky Primer, Section 1 problem

Master section 1 is mentioned on page 5. To me that means being able to play each sticking proficiently at a comfortable tempo in a relaxed manner.

Playing the figures at 120 bpm is mentioned...

Re: Alan Dawson further advice?

JohnW,

I don't remember Alan being a cyclist, which is funny because I used to ride a bike to my lesson. For the first year I'd take the bus from Harvard Square to the end of the bus line at...

Re: Alan Dawson further advice?

I agree with much of what JohnW said. I had the opportunity to study with Alan for around 2 years back in 80/81. Typically in my lessons, we would cover 4 different areas of playing involving both...

Re: Getting comfortable with Ostinatos?

Here is an exercise I remember doing along time ago (before the 25 year drum break) I believe suggested by Gary Chaffee during a lesson:

Take the samba foot ostinato for example. 1 . . a 2 .. a 3...

Re: Do you record yourself daily when practicing?

I record the L and R out from my "wife and neighbor friendly" TD-20 into a Roland R05. Works like a champ and helps me know when I sound like a chump.

Re: Possibly looking for.....

I like the veneer idea. The color of your drums almost looks more like walnut. Here's an example of a veneer that is PSA backed (adhesive backed). You could probably find something that isn't 8...

Re: drum fill books

Essential Drum Fills by Peter Erskine might be something you would like. Both triplet and eigth note based fills are illustrated along with a play along CD.

Definetely worth a look.

Re: My drum teacher is stressing me!

How long are your lessons? Is is possible that that your teacher creates the lessons for each student without a one size fits all program and because of the lesson length (1/2 hour for example) ...

Re: Ways of Practicing Improvisation/Solos

In another drumming life (away for 25 years, now back) in my lessons with Alan Dawson, he used to have students take a standard (I used to use something out of the Real Book) and sing the medody. ...
