Re: The being fired or quitting thread

I've been hired just so I could be fired.

The gig is as part of the house band, pays a living wage and then some. At the time it had been a few months since my last regular gig and I needed the...

Re: I've had tendonitis in my wrists for the last year and half. I just joined a band. Advice?

TOTALLY AGREE.

You'll need to do the same thing with the way you type if typing is also causing problems.

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

oh... its fine to say "good job" and better to say "Good work" ... but pretty devastating to say "You've got so much talent!" Telling people that they got where they are because of "talent" or...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Great movie.

Olympic coaches hand out 3X as many "Good Jobs" than constructive criticism.

At the same time, they hand out criticism. It doesn't help students to tell them a good job wasn't...

Re: problems with tremolos on xhylaphone

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

There is, without a doubt, a lot of sexism in the music industry - especially from the over 40 crowd. However, I can't help but think that part of what you are experiencing has elements of a general...

Re: Musicality and time lesson

If you're feeling mechanical, it is likely because you are thinking about getting the note in the right place. That isn't really the point of a metronome - it is only to let you know if you are...

Re: Free notation software...

Try Aered. It is dedicated for drumset notation, and it is WYSIWYG. It is faster for me to use Aered than write it by hand. Plus the sounds are OK. And it is free. It was developed for Aerodrums.

Re: A REVELATION.

Thanks!

Yes - all instruments do - musicians of all types get injured at approximately the same same rate... but the injuries of non-symmetrical instrumentalists such as guitar or the flute are...

Re: A REVELATION.

Depends on the technique! There are some terrible techniques out there, and I've had total newbie students report pain during the first lesson. Its not uncommon. Really bad technique problems will...

Re: A REVELATION.

A study from Berklee found that 99% of pianists experienced pain that stopped them from practicing at some point.

Accurate numbers on the injury rates of professional musicians are hard to come...

Re: Open Hand technique

The main issue with playing the hats with the left hand (on a right handed kit) is the hats are too close in. Crossing over is easy because the stick naturally crosses over as it comes out. Only a...

Re: problems with tremolos on xhylaphone

Xylophone tremelo should be done largely with rotation at the elbow. Even though we commonly say "turn your wrist" in English, the wrists cannot turn. This is news to most of my students. If you...

Re: A REVELATION.

I'd bet good money this is correct. Trad is designed to play a tilted drum. In order to play a flat drum, you have to dip your shoulder down. When you do this the collarbone presses down on the...

Re: question to bass drum slide technique users

Slide + Heel toe are darn near identical in form and function. Anything one does the other does. You can integrate swivel with them as well if you want.

Re: Pain on fingers - technique & control

I'm in the camp that says pain is bad. It is probably doing what it is designed to do - to warn you if a problem.

In this case, We can't tell without some sort of video, but my hunch is that you...

Re: For those who play Hip-Hop

The point in a lot of music, include a large section of hip hop, is to create a vibe ... to induce a kind of trance that is infectious and undeniable. Playing the same thing over and over is...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Some guys do a side to side thing that can tell you where they feel the down beat, and sometimes its pretty subtle, but a lot of guys don't tap at all.

Listen to Reggae much? Or does your...

Re: Drumming without shoes - caution

I doubt its from no shoes - as Pollyanna says, playing barefoot ought to help. Also, playing barefoot/socks/very thin soled shoes is so common in drummers that there would be bunion threads daily. ...

I do a lot of sub work, and sometimes I show up to the gig not just not knowing the players but not knowing what type of music we will be playing. Turnarounds happen. I play with students all the...
