Re: Band members with bad timing

Well, poor meter doesn't distress me too much. I can go with the flow (up to a point) and compensate.

What bothers me is if someone's timing is that bad, then their dynamic accents and control...

Re: Tuning Toms??

I have to agree. I have reference toms--12x8, 13x10, 16x14, and 18x16F. I have all clear ambassadors and they are really open and resonant. The best tuning: Resos all about 72, Batters around...

Re: Working On thomas Lang's Creative Coordination....

I'm not sure what exactly I'm going to work on, I think what ever my teacher says is good to move on. He's got me way farther along than I thought I would be so I will just listen to what he says. ...

Re: complete beginner; problem with bass drum technique

as a beginner a year ago, i found that a good teacher will take you miles beyond where you can ever get on your own. with that said, to just practice good bass drum technique, learn grooves, a good...

I'm up to my butt in grooves.

My teacher is groove-mad. But I think its a good thing. I've been through lots of different 8th note, 16th note HH groves, as well as 8th, 16th and 1/4 not ride patterns. And its done wonders for...

I was wondering if a particular size/depth/material of a snare shell causes it to have a natural resonance that it sounds best at.

I have two snares I've worked on tuning--a 8x14 pearl free...

Re: My Practice Routine--AKA I have no life......

Well, I did play bass in several bands for years, so I do have stage experience. And I don't have enough skills up to play with a band-yet. I figured probably one more year.

Do Big Snares Tune Better Than Small Ones?

I have a penchant for big, fat snare drums. Right now I have several snares, but my 2 go-to's are a 1980 Pearl 8x14 MIJ Brass Snare (I think it was an optional snare on the 1980 Pearl 'Genesis' kit)...

Re: Drum Show In San Diego

Um......they make them dead for a reason. The reason is, the engineer controls the sound. He will add the character of the sound AFTER the track is recorded dry. It is easy to add, and really hard...

Re: Restored 1980 8x14 Pearl Brass Snare Drum

I used 'Klean Strip' stripper which is a Polyurethane stripper. It worked great. Then I refinished with Rustoleum Gloss enamel.

That was a bad choice. It went on very poorly, and was hard to...

Acutally I haven't played many rudiments, just single and double stroke. And drag-tap, flam a bit.

My teacher has me working on accents and rebounds, and a couple of linear time patterns from...

Re: Restored 1980 8x14 Pearl Brass Snare Drum

Well, it still has a few rough areas, but I was lucky in that most of the hardware was barely pitted and needed only a little attention.

As for weight, it weighs 15 pounds. It is the loudest...

Re: Restoring and Old Pearl Snare Drum

I did have to use scotch brite to remove the corrosion spots--it was necessary to use something mildly abrasive. And it left swirl marks, but applying brasso after that and wiping and buffing with a...

Re: Restoring and Old Pearl Snare Drum

I easily stripped the whole shell with a spray on stripper I got today. I don't know if that lacquer is polyurethane, but it certaintly isnt brittle enought to be nitro.

Anyway, it came right...
