Re: The Tick Tock Effect

It really just means you don't hear the ticking of the clock as music.

If you are losing your place often, though, then perhaps you are going about it wrong. Unfortunately, much as what is taught...

Re: The Tick Tock Effect

Thanks!

"Tick tock" isn't simply a holdover, though. Every language has their own version of "tick tock" and people do actually perceive a difference. This is one of the first things studied by...

Re: The Tick Tock Effect

Yes, it is actually a focus of the book - the mindfulness parts are made clear by how the brain synchronizes and entrains with the environment. Much of what is in that section is so well known in...

The Tick Tock Effect

I can't figure out how to embed it, but I just got this video back - The Tick Tock Effect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74aPL1VgLe8)

Please let me know what you think about it? Does the...

Re: Hand Pain

I think I have a pretty good guess.

It is clear from the video that there is a lot of tension in your arms. Imagine snapping your fingers, but pausing right before the middle finger slides off...

Re: Redundancy Levels Between Common Method Books?

All you really need is page 1+2 in Syncopation. Everything else is an application of that, mathematically speaking. Oh, and whatever page has the triplets permutated out. You need that too. Benny...

Re: ?'s about traditional technique

Great video! I'd caution against actually resting your arm on the table, however. Fixing the arm like that prevents the fluid movement of the arm, and eliminates any chance of developing the whip...

Yelp

I just wanted to post a word of warning.

To make a long story short, I tried advertising my drum lessons studio with Yelp, and now I'm suing them.

They told me a lot of things that sounded...

Re: Where Do You Fit? - Poll

I worked solely as a performer for years, but these days most of my money is through teaching drums. I still count that in the pro category, though. I'm also writing books on drums and rhythm, but...

Re: Is this suspicious?

Or maybe even let Mike Johnston know about it!

If he is only selling the one copy, and is not keeping the files for himself it may be perfectly legal (although maybe not) because you can resell...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Did you ever hear any of the recordings of the Beatles with their previous drummer? Stock patterns, all.

Ringo is a true pioneer in many ways, and the Beatles never would have been as good with...

Re: Matched Grip Question

agreed, Winegums.... The grip should change depending on what angle your arms are at. There is something of a gradient from thumb-on-top when your arms are away from the body (for example, playing a...

Re: Matched Grip Question

Yes exactly! If the tick doesn't float then there are major problems. I strive for a feeling of looseness, lightness and balance as I play and trust my hands to sort the rest out on their own.

Re: groove vs chops?

Yes. Tony Royster Jr, for example, Cora Coleman-Dunham for another.

In one of his DVDs, Tony Royster talks about the transition to playing with Jay Z, and how much he had to work at it. It was a...

Re: groove vs chops?

LOL! I love it. Although I mostly disagree :o

"Chops" is technique, or how you do something. Nearly always, and certainly in the course of this discussion, chops means the physical movements a...

Re: Drummers around 5'6" - What size drums do you have?

I love Ludwig Breakbeats! (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EK62KIA/ref=drumle-20)

I'm not in the funsize category, but I teach many who are, and I always recommend this kit. I use it a lot...

Re: Anticipations, etc.

Do it from the other way around. Start with the basic beat and add notes until it works.

As everyone is saying, there are MANY ways to deal with anticipations. In my experience, the 3 most...

Re: songs with leading toms

Mr Brownstone by G+R is based on the bo diddley beat, so you could whip up an arrangement pretty easily where the drums never go to the hats. Lots of fun hits and section changes that you can either...
