Conflicted on whether to join a band.

I recently joined a band that plays classic rock and modern country. I have played in a band with the bass player and guitar player before and we're good friends, the rehearsal place isn't too far...

Re: Old and new

I read an article on how radio stations pick their music. They decide what age group they want to advertise to, then they calculate the years that the people in that age range turned 18. They go...

Re: NorCal Percussionsts Thread

I'm in Vacaville. 30 miles west of Sacramento. Originally from Arkansas and moved to California in '96. Met my wife of 13 years playing in the Vallejo community jazz band. She was in the sax...

Re: need help counting

I would disagree about it all being in 4/4. The second bar of the breaks has two extra beats. That happens twice in the song during the first and second verses. Two extra beats twice in the song...

Re: need help counting

There are a couple of different ways you could count this. You can think of them as four bars with bar two being six beats long or five bars with bar three being two beats long. I would go with the...

Re: Name that rhythm

A popular blues groove that doesn't have an official name is one I call the 1 3/4 shuffle. A mathematical play on words from the double shuffle. It's the basic groove that Chris Layton plays on Cold...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

We are a Chicago blues band. One of the venues is a restaurant that has music in the bar area on Saturday nights. In that venue, I played a small 16" bass drum, snare, hi-hat, and crash/ride...

Another Band Drama Thread

Last week the band leader, called a meeting. Apparently several venues we play at have said they don't want us back because we are too loud. The drama then ensued with everybody blaming everybody...

Re: Technical question......Song endings

It's also commonly referred to as a "trash can ending". It's a reference to some famous classical music composer (I can't remember who) that said drum solos sound like a bunch of trash cans falling...

Re: Learning a Song You Hate

Playing a song you don't like is like playing golf, it's much more fun to play than to listen to. I know some guys that hate playing Mustang Sally. I look at it this way, if I stuck the groove to...

Re: How do you not hear your bass drum?

I've just come to accept that I will not be able to hear my bass drum in live situations. Years of playing in different bands, and it's always the same. As soon as the bass player comes in, my bass...

Re: The beauty of only one kit

I have four kits and I think my back would revolt on me if I had to go down to one. One kit stays in the practice room. I would hate to set up and tear down just to practice. One kit stays in the...

Re: Duct Tape and Drum In A Box

I have had this argument for years with our worship leader. He pickes out loud rockin praise tunes played in a stadium at full volume, and them he wants us to play them quietly and somehow still...

Re: Hi Hat Placement

The issue I have doesn't have anything to do with a double pedal. It has to do with the length of my arms and legs. When I set my feet down where they naturally want to go and then put my hi hat...

Re: Duct Tape and Drum In A Box

Several years ago, I played in a church that decided to play "contemporary" music once a month. When I say contemporary, I mean playing hymns with acoustic guitars and drums with brushes. It was...

Hi Hat Placement

The thread about weight and religion took a short side track about hi hat placement problems. Basically it came down to not being able to get your foot and your hands comfortable at the same time. ...

Re: Dumming noob...stick holding advice

That kind of grip might work ok on a pad, but once you get on a kit and your arms start flying around and you start playing on different surfaces and at different angles, I don't think that grip will...

Re: Drum kit components that beginners waste their money on...

I took a new pair of VF 5a's to church a couple of weeks ago and three songs into rehearsal, half the tip flew off. Rest of the stick looks new. I get about 2 weeks or so out of the tips of a pair...

Re: Drum kit components that beginners waste their money on...

Only to lift my toes up to get a open bark sound. A few years ago I started playing quarter notes a lot with my hi hat foot when going to the ride, but last year I had knee surgery twice and now it...

Re: Drum kit components that beginners waste their money on...

I think that might have been accurate in the past, but I'm not so sure anymore. I played for 20 years with a single pedal, and now that I finally have one, I can't get my left leg and foot to do...

Re: Do you think

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem. By the time I put the hi hat stand where my left foot naturally wants to sit, I have to streach really far to play it and my arm gets tired from holding...

Re: Do you think

I'll be the fat one here so far. 6'1"/285lbs. When I was younger, it didn't affect me as much as it does now. I find my back is starting to hurt more when and after I play. I also think it is why...

Re: Shuffle and pocket groove, what are the definitions?

Playing in the Pocket is sort of a loose term that more or less means playing with a good feel at the right tempo. Usually people mean playing a beat, but fills can be played in the pocket. For...

Re: laptop question

I played once in a bar that had porn playing on the TV's instead of sports. We only played there once. That kind of crowd wasn't into blues. But back to the OP's question. I once saw a band that...

Re: Have you ever cried during a live performance?

I've come close to crying at gigs, but it's usually along the lines of, "all the time, money, and effort I've put into drumming and I still sound like this?" It especially happens when I listen to...
