Re: Head Suggestions 2010 Maple Custom Absolute Nouveaus

Thanks Lefty. Posted in another thread area as well (Gear/Heads & Sticks) and the Super 2s were suggested, as were the Response 2s and even a thicker (12 mil) one ply. I like the idea of a thicker...

Re: Head Suggestions 2010 Maple Custom Absolute Nouveaus

Thanks Dutch. I've heard they are good heads. There are just so many nuances from the varied heads and manufacturers that it gets too expensive experimenting.

Head Suggestions 2010 Maple Custom Absolute Nouveaus

Do any of you have any head suggestions re: the 2nd rack- 9" x 12" and 14" x 14" floor? These are 4 year old MCANs. Am looking for a bit less ring on the larger toms, as I play a lot of old school R...

Re: Does anyone else hate splash cymbals?

Hate? No. Would I go buy and use one however? No. I just don't quite "get" them, and on the kits I've played which have had them, I've had a tough time substituting them in place of good 16-18"...

Re: The Muscle Shoals Sound

Caught it on one of our PBS stations a few weeks ago. Agreed, very well done. My initial thoughts were that wallets were taped onto snare batters during recording sessions there, e.g. Wilson Pickett...

Re: lessons for lefties

Rod Morganstein is a lefty and has plenty of instructional stuff online. I believe they are sponsored by Vic Firth and Evans. I like watching him, but as a right handed drummer, I do have to...

Re: Sensitive drummer?

As a young (junior high) percussionist, we had a band director whose mantra to us was that "drums were to be felt and not heard". Good God we used to laugh our asses off to that, but the longer I've...

Re: Tommy Igoe - State of education

Tommy's correct. We're ALL much more visual these days, not the least of whom are the younger generations. I can't speak for everyone, but having gone thru a fair amount of "Stick Control" and...

Re: Drumming Idiosyncrasies

I'm with you on these. My wedding ring is Navajo and handcrafted from silver, which is a relatively soft metal. So drumsticks, mic stands, cymbal stands, etc, do not contact it while on a gig. I...

Re: How to get 70's funk drum sound?

Agree with most all of these. While you crank the wooden snare's batter head up, go ahead tape your wallet down onto the head. Remove the bass drum's reso head and stuff an old moving cloth in there,...

Re: Starting Over After Twenty Years

Congrats on returning. Have a similar story, though I returned in 2000. Ten years later, bought a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute Nouveau, for roughly $1K less (US) than a similar DW, in sizes, almost...

Re: What drum/cymbal/piece of gear have you owned the longest?

"Haskell W. Harr Drum Method - Book One: For Band and Orchestra purchased in 1966"
Goodness, I had that book, years ago. Don't have it any more, though I do have the GLStone "Stick Control"

Re: What drum/cymbal/piece of gear have you owned the longest?

Still have my basic '65 Ludwig club date set and a 1966 18" Zildjian Sizzle cymbal, though the rivets have long since been removed. Both of these items have been retired since I purchased a new set...

Re: Outstanding opportunity for someone....

Sales is sales. Either you know the product and can relate to the retailers or you can't. MBA? I would have reservations about some of their products, even though I owned some Ludwigs for over 40...

Have had these for a couple of years. They're pretty comfortable and have inter-changeable
filters. Not too expensive, either.

Re: Why use traditional grip on drumset?

Easier doing rolls and other rudiments, which need a "cleaner' sound, though that's probably from first learning these via traditional grip. That said, strong back beats and shuffles, are best played...

Never thought there was any harm in listening, or even attempting to play this stuff, though by admission, I didn't spend a whole lot of time doing either. A lot of these were released during the...
