Re: Arthritis in Foot - Looking for Kick Drum Alternatives

Oof. Sorry to hear it, man, truly. The bad news is that your left foot is probably going to be your bass drum foot. The good news is that the gear that will make this happen is available!

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

We actually tried to go back to stuff like this in the early 2000s, and got some good music out of it, too. But the drumming was WAY simpler, and often, though not always, played with precision.

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

Since you brought them up...

Amy Winehouse sounds mature because she emulated renowned, accomplished jazz singers and improvisers from an early age. Her grandmother was a respected singer. Her...

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

I see it as lead guitar, playing along with "lead drums" and "lead bass".

After finishing with the chords of the main riff in the first two measures, Hendrix is playing blues guitar fills nearly...

Re: Arthritis in Foot - Looking for Kick Drum Alternatives

At this point itís fair to ask: what does your doctor say about your symptoms, exactly? 62 seems bit young to be having arthritis so bad it canít be treated or rehabilitated, but Iím no doctor. Could...

Re: Bass drum technique

If your foot and ankle muscles haven't been conditioned, then all the spring and pedal adjustments in the world won't matter. You should be able to use your pedal with very "normal" settings. How it...

Re: Bass drum technique

Most pros that play jazz are comfortable using both heel down and heel up. A big upside to having a heel down technique is the lower volume.

You were just asking about practicing comping...

Re: Singers timing

What do most singers grow up doing? They sing along to the radio (or phone or whatever). Which is fun, of course, but terrible for developing musicianship.

Practicing along with the song on the...

Re: Your Moment of Glory

Thanks guys. What's really cool is that, whenever somebody asks about my best, or biggest, or craziest gig, I get to tell them about that gig.

This is awesome!

Not exactly my moment, but it was glorious...

A while back I had an adult student, Kevin, who, after teaching him on and off for 10 years, and becoming a good friend, was diagnosed with cancer....

Re: Not sure how to do this

Been there! I just straight up bring the laptop into the car now. Of all the engineers I know, a LOT of them are also drummers...

Re: Not sure how to do this

Well, the problem is, when the sound is played through good equipment (in this case Larry's studio monitors), it does sound good. But Larry wants his recordings to sound good in other places, too.

Re: Not sure how to do this

Sure, we'll have some preferences. But you must also do the hard work of really learning your headphones, monitors, etc., by listening to recordings that you know well on them. Listen to a wide...

Re: Not sure how to do this

In mastering, there is no specific set of steps to take. But, it's done in acoustically "perfect" rooms, with a great monitoring system, including subwoofers, surround speakers, non-parallel walls,...

Re: Not sure how to do this

You have just nailed the two most difficult things about mixing: getting a mix that "translates" to many different playback systems, and controlling the low end. Any idiot can mix 150 Hz and up, but...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

Please, hear me out. No, not just me. I'll try to elaborate.

I was never talking about good players with good time. I wrote "If you're fortunate enough to have metronome-like, fantastic timing...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

Respectfully disagree.

Playing live to a click regularly, over a few years, really sharpens your sense of time, and that sharper sense will help when playing to a click or not. I don't feel I'm...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

This hasn't been my experience, playing with at least 6 bands that use click tracks for the whole show.

If someone has bad timing, but knows that the drummer will flex -- he/she will probably...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

It's possible (and desirable and professional) to play entire shows without EVER getting "off-grid" or having to "flex the band" back onto the click. The trick is to not allow yourself to be pulled...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

If someone cares that there are f****ing hi-hats during the "keyboard only" parts when your cover band is playing Jump, then they're a musician, and they've been judging your band all night anyway....

Re: A disturbing revelation

It's OK to dig the old stuff. Actually, it's important that you dig the old stuff. The artists that combine genres, and do it well, genuinely love the old stuff that they're mixing with.

Re: A disturbing revelation

You actually have two problems, but one problem isn't "sound", it's more accurately called timbre. You don't mind a snare drum sound, but you mind the hand clap. In lots of music, those two things...

Re: Buying a second hand 60's Ludwig drum set

Yeah, reading fast there, sorry!

Too bad about the gull wings on the C&C's. They look longer and better, but I guess not.
