Published in Modern Drummer

I have a series of three articles in Modern Drummer magazine starting this month (Sept. issue - they are ahead by a few months). Subscribers should already have the issue. It hits the news stands...

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

Voluntary for extra pay is fine. I believe some musicians that I worked with helped out with bingo for extra pay. That way, it is the musician deciding to take on an extra role.

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

Some of what I'm hearing is correct. Some is a little far fetched. I think rumors sometimes steamroll. I have never heard of a cruise ship musician being hired for double duty to wait tables or...

Why not do both - and do a Disney Cruise?

Re: Preparing for Cruise Ships. Some advice?

Having done cruise ships, I can tell you that Todd's reply is 100% accurate. And you have found the right books to study out of. Houghton's Anthology is the closest that you're going to get to...

Re: how to teach a toddler?

I usually start students at age 6 or 7. I have started 5 year old students (depending upon their attention span).

Of course if the student is not ready to start lessons, I want to offer a...

Re: What do you think of my new website!

Really nice site. I have built a DYI site and know how it can be. The only thing that I noticed is that some of the websites/emails are not set up as clickable links. For example, the website for...

Re: Learning drums

I would suggest finding the best drum teacher in your area and signing up for lessons. A credible drum teacher will guide you through the basics and introduce you to styles, not just bands. I try...

Re: Help I need some good drum tab sites !

To add to Todd's point, music is a language. If someone doesn't know the language, wouldn't it be better to learn it correctly before thinking about shortcuts? Just think of the language we use for...

Regarding the full stroke, here again is an except from my book:

"Many drummers throw the stick down and stop the rebound. This requires them to pick up the stick before making another hit. ...

Re: The level system?

Since I wrote a book entitled The Level System (http://www.johnsondrum.com/store), you can safely assume that I believe in the system. As a teacher, I would never mock or ridicule any technique. It...

Re: OT: Clark Terry Dead, Age 94

I just watched Keep on Keeping On (http://www.amazon.com/Keep-Keepin-DVD-Clark-Terry/dp/B00P1WGC6I), a documentary about Clark Terry. It was amazing to see how music kept him going. As he was in...

Re: Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

As I said, I own a set of V-drums and use them quite a bit for late night practicing. So what I am about to say is simply an observation - not anything against electronics.

I do understand that...

Re: Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

I have both - actually I have 3 acoustic kits and a set of Td-9 V-drums. While the electronic kits cannot match or replicate the feel of acoustic, they do offer some benefits. I can practice late...

Re: Sight Reading help please

I think we may need a bit more information. Such as:

1. Are you auditioning to get into a college or university? If so, you can expect sight-reading to be more than just rock beats.

2. If...
