Re: Ideal 2 Floor Tom Sizes?

I'd opt for a 14,16 setup with the 12 rack tom. If it were a 13 rack tom I'd do 16,18. I currently am playing a kit with a 14x14 and have had no trouble getting it to sound good. Vintage emperors...

Re: Jazz

If you intend on playing American popular music then Jazz/Blues is the mother tongue. The main strain that has informed almost all popular music in this country (and a good portion of the rest of the...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

They are. They cover the main bases despite not being of that era. Personally i don't get pop songs from the last 50 years stuck in my head the way pop songs from the 1890's-through the 1940's get...

Re: Rude by Magic! Drum Tab?

Spot on. Nothing in there is difficult rhythmically. The feel will take some work but the basic parts are pretty simple. It wouldn't be hard to transcribe either but the sheet music will just tell...

Re: Worst song ever

Or both. Afternoon Delight is a very well crafted piece of music with very good vocal writing. Not the best lyrics but when judging music the lyrics aren't a consideration unless they are set in a...

Re: Does anyone actually like big finales?

Ok, this is one of those thing that really depends on context. I'm going to explain it the only way I can. Lets take a Beethoven symphony which has a coda and a ton of basically cadential chords that...

Re: Super-Ludwig 401

Sir, the only thing i can say is please fix the glaring misquote in your profile pic. Neither character ever utters those word in the entirety of that movie. Since you have Bogart it should read...

Re: Is it just me?

Dark and trashy cymbals seem more versatile to me. I seem to be able to get more sounds out of them. They seem to respond to more minute changes in playing. I like them in other words. as far as i...

Re: Mid/high level kits.

Yes, USA pricing. I'm in New York. If one considers a mexican strat as the beginning of mid level with guitars then we are at about 450ish from general retailers. Same price as a Mexican P-Bass...

Re: Mid/high level kits.

I look at it like this. In terms of pricing categories we have
Entry Level $100-$500
Mid level $400-$1000
High end $1000 and up.
This corresponds to the other common rock instrument's pricing....

Re: Professional responsibility

As a teacher i find myself falling back most often on tried and true pedagogy. It worked for me and most of my students had never picked up sticks before so i feel they are in need of it. Online...

Re: Backline gear nightmares

Rule one of playing a backline kit. bring your own snare, cymbals, bass pedal and have the stands with you. Drum Key and Sticks are so obvious that they shouldnt have to be mentioned though i've played...

Re: Ddrums??

I am not a fan of Ddrum. I am not very fond of how they sound (i play a journeyman kit at work and have done a fair bit of tinkering with that and have played the other lines when i last went out...

Re: Recurring dream - drum related

I have a recurring dream about finding a Ludwig WMP 20,13,16 kit at a tag sale for $80. Hasn't come true yet but i keep hoping.

Re: The matching snare

I think that you are intentionally ignoring the fact that almost all major drum companies make individual snare drums. Most matching wood snares included with kits that i've encountered have used the...

Re: What's the best things about your playing?

One of the best things about my playing is my ability to play fast passages in time and in proper musical context. This should also indicate what one of the worst aspects of my playing has been over...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

That notation is quite correct rhythmically and i'm sure you can fill in the orchestration from there. Google free staff paper print a sheet and grab a pencil.

Re: Best drum music notation software

Thats a watered down version of Sibelius. I use Finale and i find getting drum notation out of it frustrating as hell but i find that Sibelius is just as hard and that the watered down versions of...

Re: Too smart for my friends?

Re: Tabs Vs. Traditional Notation

That looks worse than guitar tabs. I am dismayed. I can understand and have used hybrid notation systems (think a mix of traditional notation for the bits of the piece that cn be notated that way and...

Re: Tabs Vs. Traditional Notation

I cannot agree more with that statement. To my guitar students' dismay i still cant read tabs comfortably but sit me down with the same thing fully notated and i can read it and play it faster than...
