Chuck Tilley

Chuck Tilley was on the cover of Modern Drummer some years back (mid-2000s?) and currently plays for Six Wire. He's been a professional drummer his entire life and was my first teacher when I took...

Re: Stanton Moore here

I ran into (literally) Stanton Moore at the Chicago Drum Show two weeks ago. While I couldn't get a picture, I did get to run into him. He was looking the opposite direction while venturing across...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

Well any way you can get it :) I managed to get an hour in, so yesterday would be considered 'maintenance'. I didn't move backwards basically. Arthritis or carpel tunnel syndrome hasn't settled...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

I'm more of a contemporary jazz player than swing, but thanks for the compliment LOL.
I'm in the middle of my 2 hr practice so I'll respond later :)

Yeah, I completely understand. Perhaps...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

Listened to both tunes and neither IMO were technique-intensive, although your playing was good and well placed. Is it possible, assuming your other material is similar in style and technicality,...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

I certainly feel that for some of us, there is a power trip going on, as in I'm not just playing for me, but for the people that know me, know my playing, and expect a certain level of playing from...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

And what is your experience level? Tell us more about yourself please. How long have you been playing drums? Any videos we can look at?

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

How often are you practicing? The title of your thread gave me the impression that this frustration you're experiencing was on a recurring basis, hence my reply. In any event, it sounds like you...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

Well let me clarify. I don't actually know exactly what the cause is for the OP's issue. I'm just saying what it COULD be, as I haven't heard the OP play, and even if I did, it could be a number of...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

I'm sorry to hear that, Andy! Half of my ass thinks you're kidding. In any event, this is my honest assessment of the OP's issue. "Just play" is certainly a valid solution, but I think that sells...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

Perhaps a "consciousness" of stick control? And what I mean by that is not trying to learn trad grip or matched grip 'cause someone said so, but to learn to control the stick via whatever methods...

Re: Anyone ever wonder if it's all worth it?

Echo what everyone else has said. I'd add that, when it comes to feeling like you aren't getting anywhere, it has to do with technique, since technique is the foundation for which everything else...

Re: Kiko Freitas licks

Is anyone trying these out? I was thinking of making a video of how I (or perhaps you?) would go about executing these things we call written exercises, rhythms, phrases, what have you. And then...

Re: Ever had a trainwreck?

I don't play many gigs, so don't have much to say on that regard. Having a bass drum and/or hihat move on you because I forgot the floor rug is probably the only thing major I've had. I did have...

Re: once again.....

I don't know if that (drummer too loud issue) is typical to certain styles, but I rarely see that issue in the jazz venues I've been to. But I mainly patron reputable bands and venues - Vitello's,...

Re: Back to the grind

That's certainly true. I just revisited Jojo's Secret Weapons DVD and now I do feel like quitting LOL.

If it isn't the humanoids, it's the Jojo's and Ryuga's of this world.

Re: What I've been doing at Berklee ...

From one female drummer to another, I like what I'm hearing! I wish I could have gone to a music school like Berklee, or Eastman. Arrangement I think helps a drummer form ideas and execute them on...

Re: Back to the grind

What I'm also finding is that, after a downtime, it's best to get back at it fulltime, almost like some muscle memory thing going on. And I know when that point is, when the patterns and ideas start...

Re: Back to the grind

Well I really have only two snare drums that I like to use these days - the Pearl Masters 5.5x14 and the Pearl 3.5x14 Free-Floating. I don't know the species of wood but they sound really good to my...
