Re: Left hand: uneven strikes & poor grip. Advice needed

Keep practicing in front of a mirror, get out your copy of Stick Control, and play the LH-lead exercises slowly enough that you can maintain the form you want. I've found that a lot of students are...

Re: Trading fours when the tune has tags

Usually whoever is soloing at the end of the form--usually you-- plays the extra measures on his solo. Or if the tag is 4 bars long, you might stick to four measure solos, so the drums end up playing...

Re: The Speed Obsession

I'm lost. What exactly are you trying to say evolution has to do with the subject at hand?

Re: How were drums taught back in the day?

Sorry you couldn't find anything of substance in my comment to respond to, and you have to talk about alleged ulterior motives, and my tone, as you perceive it.

Yeah, that's a bad way to...

Re: Samba

I would work up some actual Brazilian rhythms (http://www.cruiseshipdrummer.com/2013/06/a-page-of-brazilian-rhythms.html) with the left hand, as well, and be listening to the music. The patterns are...

Re: Making the most out of limited practice time

I used to try to make sure that everything I practiced worked on multiple levels; so I was always thinking about fitting things into a musical phrase, and how I was going to improvise with it, and...

Re: How were drums taught back in the day?

I'm not seeing this at all. Most of the people who are good now got that way before the Internet was a thing. The web really had next to nothing to offer re: drum instruction/information before...

Re: The Clave Police

Yeah, it's probably best not to bring up Hollywood Mexican banditos in a discussion of Caribbean/Caribbean-American music.

What does this have to do with what's being discussed? The concept...

Re: What would you appraise my kit for?

Doing an eBay 'sold listings' search for each of those items should answer that for you.

Re: Syncopation, Dawson methods, Goal tempos?

Either one-- alternating accented triplets or RH/melody-LH/fill-in (with the RH breaking up the LH multiples).

Re: Syncopation, Dawson methods, Goal tempos?

Oh, I should probably revise my tempos-- 220 is pretty bright for doing a full page of the interpretation. In actual playing you do play that sort of thing at 220 and faster, but doing the long...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

They're playing snare drum from day one. When we begin including the drumset depends on the student-- some of them are playing percussion in school, and aren't interested in it. Some of them I'll...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

Hopefully you've had some experience as a student of a competent teacher-- I would just recall that, and do what they did, to start. If you have no background at all that way, you probably should not...

Re: The Clave Police

Claves the instrument is not the same thing as clave the rhythmic concept.

Since the music really belongs to another culture, and to the people who have put in the many years of effort it takes...

Re: Copyright Infringement

Great! A small counter to this anti-artist tidal shift that has been going on the last ~15 years. Hopefully we'll see more like that.

Re: sixteenths on hats?

I use all wrist, plus an 8th note-rate forearm movement at faster tempos. Often I'll put my index finger on top of the stick, the way some Latin guys do-- that helps you play low, which is a big...

Re: The Clave Police

Samba is a Brazilian style, and doesn't use clave... clave is a Cuban/Salsa thing...

A lot of music using a "Latin" feel, is not clave-based-- they may be doing a Brazilian style, or a...

Re: Tour buy in: yes or no?

I hope it's $1200 for the whole band. If that's just your individual contribution, I would say it's a definite pass. I would have to be feeling great about how my band is going to go over with the...

Re: Would like some feedback on my hand technique

Right, basically palms down... the only time I switch to a thumbs-up grip is to play the ride cymbal.

That's why I don't like those headphones, or near-silent practice pads-- they induce you...

Re: Hahahahahahahaha :)

It's like with drum corps guys, which I once was, and of whom I have known many: they get out of corps, and someone will play Clair de Lune (http://youtu.be/ZIsQPdC9YnY), and they'll still be hearing...

Re: Would like some feedback on my hand technique

Sure, I hope that helps. Re: #3, if you do what you're doing on an actual snare drum, I think you'll hear what I mean-- you'll be hurting your ears, and not getting a very good tone. Plain old...
