Re: Who uses Moongel?

You can adjust the amount of damping by how far outward you put it. Right behind the bell just tames things a bit for quiet gigs. Halfway out drys it up quite a bit. Never put it all the way out...

Re: Discouraging & deterring theft on gigs

Pretty much in agreement with everyone. I usually start packing up as soon as the last hit comes down. Cymbals, pedals, snare, fold up the stands and keep them in the back of the stage while...

Re: Drum Etiquette at Open Jams

^^ This. I've seen some great drummers sit down at a horrid kit and drive the band like a freight train, and often get sound out of them that nobody else could. It's easy to be comfortable, doing...

Re: Amplified Bass drum sound problem.

If you have the aux buses on the mixer to do it, you may want to do a thing called "aux fed subs". That is you run the subs off an aux send and only turn up things on that aux bus that belong in the...

Re: Drum Etiquette at Open Jams

Unless it's a really bizarre house set up, I try to play it like it is. I go to blues jams expecting to play blues, funk jams expecting to play funk, and so on. Some hosts in small bars bring...

Re: Amplified Bass drum sound problem.

A cardioid or directional mic does not like being confined. The way the mic cancels sound from the back and sides is compromised by near boundaries. They suddenly become omnidirectional and pick up...

Re: Ok, do your worst ;)

Like you said, it's in time. Which makes it musical. I love that term "the dreaded gallop". I see so much of that. Actually for me, leading left like that helps me keep it more even. But you...

Re: What's the Hardest Position to Fill in a Band?

I'd say it depends on the level you're looking for. Plenty of hacks that don't get playing together out there. And if you can afford it, there are plenty of A-list, first call pro's who can do it...

Re: gig money for minor

Also, if this adds up to some money, he may get 1099'd. Get ready to do self employment taxes. Start saving gear receipts.

Re: gig money for minor

Agree that age is irrelevant. If you can do the gig, you've earned it. The only reason to have a "trial" period is if there's a question about being able to do the gig.

Re: Carpeted or ATA Racks - Opinions, please...

LF, you might scratch EWI grade ATA style cases slamming them into the back of a Suburban but you won't dent or crack them. When I had mine I would roll them into a trailer and use ratchet straps to...

Re: Carpeted or ATA Racks - Opinions, please...

We're kind of going between local bar/wedding band and varsity touring rigs here. The difference between loading into a box or semi-truck and the back of an SUV.

My impression was that the OP was...

Re: Bands ... The Franchise

Welcome to the world of mercenary semi-casuals. Lots of "bands" around here that do this. Leader with a rotating cast of sidemen. I even know of one where even the leader/singer rotates out when...

Re: Trigger tape Trouble,help!!!!

The tape you want is 3M VHB. This is what holds cell phones and laptops together making them "unrepairable".

As mentioned, cleanliness is the adjunct of stickiness.

Re: When soundmen attack

I have a Kickport in my drum. With a Beta 52 it sounds best with the mic right at the outside edge. Shoving a mic into a port is a sure way to get boom and ringing. I can't tell how many times...

Re: Carpeted or ATA Racks - Opinions, please...

There's ATA and there's ATA style. Depends on how rough you expect to be with them. They're definitely lighter. And if it matters more pro looking. Carpeted racks spell cheap faster than...

Re: Steppin' Out - Shuffle Pattern?

Agree, that pattern might work for a sit down crowd as it follows the bass line. But it's far too broken up for a place where people dance. The actually break parts are distracting enough. I'd...

Re: so my band wants to do top 40s...

The more music you can play, convincingly, the better you will be at the music you like to play. There's a video of Derek Roddy playing jazz and doing it well. Odd's are your heros can play many...

Re: Incredible funk/fusion chops and licks in simple R&B Songs

I've worked with drummers who can do this while still keeping the groove in the forefront. Lots of linear licks that mostly sound like different patterns, even when it's some 5 over 4 thing. No...

Re: Snare size for ghost notes

Really tight or shallow snares are harder to get the ghost notes down on. It can be done but it takes more technique. A deeper or lower tuned snare will be easier to get them down low. Looser...

Re: I jammed with people I didn't know!

Jams where it's music first are wonderful. Great for practicing listening. And that feeling when you are locked in with others and the song is playing itself, priceless. That's what jamming really...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

How about this one: http://youtu.be/U4JzqBr3QNY
If the bass player doesn't get it, you're dead.

The 2nd half of What Is Hip gets me too. Have the hardest time finding the 1.

Re: For those who play Hip-Hop

Just my opinion but before "making something your own" you should be able to do it right first. Meaning, hip hop is all about groove. Play like someone touring with R&B/Hip Hop artists, Tony...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Flat tire shuffle?

Since I play guitar, I can usually figure out what they are trying to do.

Often I'll chick the hi-hat or something to confirm we're together. If they spin around I know they...

Re: Tempos - Too Fast?

Tempo is really critical to singers. Often folks will count off too fast to try and get some excitement into a song only to find they can't get all the words in. I always tell people to sing it to...
