Re: dumb question about keyholing

I once read an interview with Ronald Shannon Jackson where he said he would file the hole on some cymbals so that the 'sweet spot' stayed in the same place. That's the only time I've heard of...

Re: I'm back. Did you miss me?

Great to hear that you're back and cancer free.
Also I like your style getting back to gigging already! Very cool.

Re: Looking at your foot

Not looking at it as such, but I do sort of shift my mental attention to my foot at times, when I feel like it's not behaving itself and needs to do better! That often helps.

Re: Gretsch New Classic snare drum

As

Good plan. The Tune-Bot is good for checking or calibrating tuning, but it works best when combined with your ears. Tuning drums takes lots and lots of practice, and I'm still learning things...

Re: Gretsch New Classic snare drum

It's a great drum.

Mine is all stock heads, top tuned to 308 lug pitch, reso tuned to 348 lug pitch.

Sounds terrific.

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats Kit

So I gigged the Breakbeats kit again last night, at a different venue (about the same size - 150 people). Same band, different sound man.

Again the feedback on the sound was great, mostly the...

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats Kit

Well, I have a Breakbeats kit now, and I gigged it for the first time this week. It was a small room (about 150 people) and a small stage, so it seemed like a good chance to try them for real.

Re: Different grip on each hand

This stuff really doesn't matter. Choice of grip is a means to an end.

My grip changes all the time: as my hands move around the kit, when the feel of the music changes, as the speed of playing...

Re: Ludwig Breakbeats VS Sonor Safari

I have the Breakbeats kit and love it. It's a lot of fun to play, very portable and sounds great, especially considering the price. I know there are lots of happy Safari owners on this forum too. ...

Re: Wood snare alternatives (to my Ludwigs)

I have a Pearl 14x5" Maple FFS which I probably use more than any other snare. Tunes up pretty well, and has a nice focused woody sound with a crack! (to my ear, anyway).
They are pretty widely...

Re: A Singing Drummer's Mic Set-up

I'm the same. My mic is on a boom on the left, and I turn my head a little to sing.
I sing backup so I'm not singing all the time. I like the freedom to be 'off the mic' when I'm not actually...

Re: Small and easy to transport drum kit

IMO The stock heads are fine for practice, except for the snare. I had to change the batter head on the snare to get a sound that I was happy with (I tried a coated PS3 that I had lying around and...

Re: Band members with bad timing

Good advice. You can subtly help them to stay in time, for example tapping hi-hat in sections when they are playing on their own, or giving cues when a change/stop/start is coming up.
I sometimes...

Re: I'm overwhelmed

Don't be embarrassed. We all start from where we are, and we never stop learning!

It is true that there is a lot of content out there and it can make you feel like you will never be that good. ...

Re: Can you Custom Order Odd Drums from the Big Names

Pearl will make you a drum to your chosen spec. I was looking for an extra tom for a 20-year old Masters kit a while back and contacted Pearl about it via their website.
They asked me to give...

Re: Adjusting to Acoustic Bass Drums

That's a nice problem to have!

It's true that the different feel can be a bit offputting, but it can also be a motivation that will improve your bass drum technique in time. I had a kick with...

Re: Drum store being sued

I think I might sue my drum store too - I bought a pair of those Vinnie Colaiuta sticks and they didn't make me sound like him at all. Bah!

Re: Hello! Need help with studio gear decisions

Hi tdwc,

While the SM57s are great all-rounders (and certainly good for drums) you might want to consider a pair of condenser mics for overheads. It just depends how far you want to go.

I...

Re: Tension

+1 to that. Less tense = better playing in my experience. I sometimes pretend that it's not me doing the playing, and I'm just listening to it. That helps to minimize tension, although it looks weird...

Re: Best way to tune a Powerstroke 3 for Bass Drum?

Hi,

I have PS3 clear front and back on my 22 bass drum.
What I like to do is to tune the front head about half a turn up from the wrinkle point, and the batter about a quarter turn above that. ...

Re: I'm in a Band - And I Have a Problem

Well, this is great! And a nice problem to have. All I would say is, try to leave it on amicable terms (if possible) with the band you're dropping out of, just in case it doesn't work out with the...

Pearl's hardware has remained similar over the years so they even use the same tube sizes etc. Any Pearl Tom holders will fit.
Also You can almost certainly find replacement tension rods and other...

Re: Tinnitus (ear ringing)

Yep, +1. I use these too. All the time. Reasonably priced and widely available.
