yes top felts and wing nuts are completely useless ...

the only reason for a top felt is to keep the cymbal...

I never use top felts or wing nuts
to me they are completely pointless and serve absolutely no purpose ... in about 99% of situations anyway

I use the regular...

go to pg 37 of Syncopation (38 if you have a newer printing)

use line one and put it through the necessary steps

for example start with just your hands ...

play the ride beat and play...

two things

if we are talking about just getting the thing together I highly recommend allowing 2 and 4 to be slightly heavier... not a whole lot ... but enough to push a music a touch.

another thing I'll throw out is picking up the Mark Guilliana book Exploring Your Creativity On The Drumset

it's a fantastic book based on an extremely useful philosophy

it will not spoon...

there really is no other way to do it aside from gaining your facility ... getting your time feel together... and listening to a ton of records

working on soloing in a jazz context isn't really a thing

you more work on developing vocabulary, facility, and ideas so that you can speak spontaneously when called upon

the absolute last...
