Re: Studio build help/info

I only have a tiny studio in my ex living room, but I have learned a few things.

Buy bulk cable and put all your cable wiring in the walls to avoid wires all over the floors.

At each station,...

I just saw Phil Collins :)

I was flipping thru the TV channels and I just saw Phil Collins on Miami Vice. I had forgotten all about it.

It was even better because it was on Telemundo :)

Re: Totally lost

That is funny because, ever since I was a kid, I would watch audiences clap along with the music and I wondered why so many of them were not even close to in time. :)

Re: Taking kick pedals on a plane

Logic says, take the time to check everything.

Do you really want to be that guy who holds up the line trying to explain what you are trying to carry on and why you need to carry it?

Air travel...

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

You will have made your decision in a few minutes. Possibly before they even set up :)

Change your perspective.

Music is FUN so have fun with it. There is nothing serious about it at...

Re: Band vent....

Lazy musicians? That's crazy talk.

Acceptance is the key.

You can't change it, you can only devise methods of working around it.

This ^ applies to MANY other areas of life as well.

Re: Totally lost

Mostly off I presume?

Working with a metronome "click" is annoying. Playing to something like a simple bass line is enjoyable and will produce the same results.

If you can turn it on and off...

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

Ideally, they come to me so I don't have to tear down, set up, tear down and set up my gear :)

Second best, they have a decent kit and a decent place to play.

Don't overlap auditions. Leave...

Re: Always out of breath, need to get my stamina up somehow.

I'm going to guess that you are not breathing properly.

It is easy to get so focused on something that you hold your breath at times and kind of "forget" to breathe.

Craigslist ads crack me up....

I see a lot of this:

".....prefer a mixture of john bonham/steve gadd type drummer."

They are not asking to much from an amateur Craigslist drummer :)

Re: Who "invented" the rock beat?

That was my first any only lesson in the early sixties.

My Dad brought home a kit, sat me down and showed me the "rock beat" and let me figure out the rest on my own :)

Good times!!

Re: It's hard to start a band, when you're a Drummer

Thanks Man!

The studio is always open....and free :)

It is amazing how much we have stored in our brains after all these years. When you sit down at the keyboard and put down a simple bass...

Re: It's hard to start a band, when you're a Drummer

You need to add value to yourself. Be more than a drummer.

I have embraced technology and I thing a LOT more people could/should do this.

One thing I did was to set up a studio so...

Re: Drum Etiquette at Open Jams

How is that gig going?

We always play at my place on Thursdays so I never get to go to Rips.

Re: Giving bandmates rides to gigs!

There is no crying in rock and roll.

Ask yourself, "is he worth it?" then give him a ride or don't.

It's your choice, but it sounds petty to me. I'd give a stranger a ride if they asked...

Re: playing less and keeping time

IMO, tracks are the same as a metronome, assuming the tracks are in tempo. They are just more enjoyable to use instead of a clickty clack sound.

How you feel is huge but how you actually...

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

Step one.

I'd say, find the type of music that moves you and simply try to play along using a very basic pattern.

Step two. Start practicing rudiments and move them into your play.

Re: A Singing Drummer's Mic Set-up

I just use a boom with with a gooseneck at the end. That allows the boom arm to go up high, away from my left elbow, and bend down into a proper place.

It's never really in the way but I have to...

Re: playing less and keeping time

First, just because you feel less solid, doesn't mean you are less solid.

Second, play with a click as much as you can.

Third, playing a simple slow song at 80 BPM is harder than playing a 125...

Re: Why do listeners move on as they get older?

People are very different so you will have to ask them :)

I remember being 15 (in 1967) , walking down the street and wondering if and when I would...

Re: Recording from Roland TD9

All I can tell you is that you would record the drums just like you would record a guitar.

Use the instrument cable out of your TD into he recording device.

Re: Judge Says Teen Drummer's Playing Isn't a Nuisance

Heh heh, that explains a LOT about the attitude :)

Different people make the world go round. If a neighbor asked me to quiet things down, I'd simply comply instead of going the "Eff you, I'm...

Re: Singing and playing?

I don't sing well but I learned to do it rather quickly.

Like someone else mentioned, sometimes you have to modify your parts and it's a lot easier to modify drum parts than piano or guitar...
