Re: The Instrument Is An Illusion

Your posts are a reason for staying on here Andrew.

A few weeks ago the question was asked whether anyone could be a drummer. I replied:

"I would say of course not. Speaking from personal...

Re: Yes it can be done! (Steve Gadd video)

Very nice and he has even then got such a clear personal voice. There is a man with something to say with his drumming.

Yep those look like Ludwig but my old teacher new Gadd back in the day and...

Re: If practice noise was never an issue....

There's nothing new under the sun: check this out for an improvised practice pad:

Re: If practice noise was never an issue....

The noise of practising is not an issue for me. I never use a practice pad - only unmuted drums. I have unused practice pads sitting around the house but tend just to go into the music room if I...

Re: Sexy grooves

Clearly you are unqualified to take this gig and it should go to a more experienced player like myself - ahem! :-)

Re: Trad vs. Matched grip, Thomas Lang

First, he makes clear in the article that a genetic predisposition to carpel tunnel syndrome is important. The experience of others is limited unless you know what their predisposition is.

Re: Best Female Drummer?

Charlievictor and Daydrummer - you think someone with a nice smile but poor technique who plays along to records should be mentioned in the same thread as Teri Lynne Carrington? Did you watch the...

Re: This should be interesting...

Hello Mary

One thing that I think may enhance the value of this. Don't think in terms of number of seconds (30 seconds - right?). Think in terms of a number of bars at a set tempo. If you went...

Re: Having trouble with reading notations :(

Your teacher should be able to explain this to you in seconds. It is the kind of thing that is easy to show on the kit, much harder to explain in words (that is why we have drum notation).

I...

Re: What kind of set is this Premier?

It would need to be a serious Premier geek who could tell the model from that photo. Better photos of drums (ideally with badges and serial numbers) and hardware would be useful.

Re: Should the drummer be banned from the studio post-drum tracking?

Well you need to be careful with that kind of threat because I don't see anyway of being able to enforce it (not easily anyway).

Without wanting to stir the pot, could there be any other reason...

Re: Do you think

I think we should get back to talking about being over-weight. That's the elephant in the room.

Re: Pacing

Excellent find. I don't have 45 mins right now but you can bet that is going to be played this weekend.

Thanks for posting this Andrew. Greg Hutchinson needs some love. He's a fantastic player...

Re: Buddy Rich Memorial Concert in UK!

You know I'm sure it will be great. But I saw the Buddy Rich big band several times in the UK when Buddy was still alive. That's the band I care to remember.

Re: Should I sell my kit?

Here's an option that I don't think anyone has suggested yet. For the moment, sell one of the 22" bass drums and buy a matching 20". Then you really do have maximum versatility with what you have...

Re: Depths: Science or Clever Marketing?

Fair point. At the moment:

10x6.5; 12x8; 13x9; 14x10 and 16 x ??? (it's like one of those IQ tests you used to do as a kid). Not sure your precise ratio thing works exactly for the whole...

Re: Depths: Science or Clever Marketing?

I'm trying to reconcile that with my own personal experience. I have a 1962 Slingerland (12x 8; and 13x9 on the rack) - thin 3-ply shells with re-rings. Sounds great.

I have a late 70s Sonor...

Re: Pacing

That is very good to know. It is one of my most played albums and one I often return to and always seem to get something out of. Still sends shivers up my spine at times despite numerous listenings.
