Re: What kit do you use?

You never know. The drummer in my old corporate band was given a kit by his college music director. It was a '70s Ludwig butcher block kit that was missing a few parts and languishing in a closet...

Re: Playing Live With a Metronome

I've played with sequenced tracks and have friends who do the same. Guess how those parts got put into the backing tracks? I played them. I made the music. How I phrased those tracks and what I...

Re: Playing Live With a Metronome

Band I'm playing with has terrible time. 6 people all playing the same song at the same time all by themselves. Each one thinking they're the only one doing it right. Guitar player rushes, with...

Re: I must be an anachronism

I think what you're after is the RIAA equalization curve. There was an RCA Orthorphonic curve, a NAB curve and others. Gear from the 50's and 60's often had selector switches for whoever's records...

Re: Any Rogers experts here care to take a look at this ad?

I sold Rogers drums in '77. I don't remember factory single headed versions. All the ones we stocked were normal double headed drums. Loud, and solid hardware for the time.

Re: Stevie Wonder - Superstition

While nobody's going to play it exactly like the record, it bugs me to death when folks get all wild and syncopated with it. Totally loses the groove and essence of the song without the steady 4 and...

Re: Playing Someone Else's Kit

If I don't know the other player or how his kit will be set up, I'll bring my throne, snare with stand and hats with stand. Usually some cymbals as well in case they have really odd tastes like...

Re: Stevie Wonder - Superstition

Daymn, now I'm going to have to learn that song all over again. I always thought it was just a straight 4 on the kick with the loose hi-hat stuff over it. Trademark Stevie looseness. But somehow...

Re: But What To Wear?

Larry, be careful of shiny tight weave fabrics that don't breathe.

Back in the late '70s the cabaret/show band I played with decided to snazz it up for NYE. We had these motorcycle jackets made...

Re: But What To Wear?

What about the quintessential bowling shirt? Derigur for blues bands but works in many instances. Over slacks it can be classy enough for a corporate gig, over jeans you can do blues, rock, even...

Re: Felt vs plastic

I wish PureSound hadn't discontinued their beaters. I've had the felt come off of mine and had to glue it back on. So far so good. But I'd like to have a spare or two. The shape of the surface...

Re: Antiquing / Distressing drums and hardware

Most of the guitar "relicing" of hardware is done with fairly aggressive acids to promote corrosion. Which has to be neutralized very thoroughly or you will have problems down the road. Also,...

Re: Why the "hate" for nylon tips??

The one thing I don't see which I do "hate" is how they mark up the ride cymbal. I dislike hosting a jam night and finding all these white marks all over my prized ride. I guess I need something...

Re: Help with trying to soundproof shop building

Double layers of 5/8 sheetrock will be the cheapest part of the whole thing. So don't scrimp there. Buy the Green Glue in a tub and get the applicator gun. For that much area it will be...

Re: Smaller thinner kicks with good sound- ideas?

This is the 16" kick on my Sonor Safari kit. Phone recording in a very hard and live room but you can get an idea how deep it sounds.

What I did was use some...

Re: Tricks for faster set up

Agreed about the carts. The number of trips back and forth from stage to car are what eats time. I have a small folding flat-bed cart for when I have my little car packed with PA and drums, but if...

Re: Drum mic recommendations

If you don't need a lot of attack from your toms you can use minimal mic techniques like Gly Johns or Recorderman. Otherwise a set of Sennheiser e604s is kind of a budget standard and very common in...

Re: Tricks for faster set up

Back when I had a larger vehicle I had one of those nylon golf bag things for hardware. I just folded up the bases and left everything else sticking out the top. Wrapped a bungee cord around the...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

Great advice jazzin. For soloing in jazz, start with the phrasing of the melody. That keeps the flow of the song going and is a great jump off point. Think of a jazz singer or horn player taking...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

In Santa Cruz there's jazz jam sessions on Sunday's at Bocci's Cellar and Monday's at Jerry's Front Pocket. Neither is terribly high end although most players are solid.

I went to see John...

Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

I use those quarter turn Remo clutches. So there's one on the stand, one spare in the bag (I've heard they break but hasn't happened to me yet) and the original clutch in the bag. When I break down...

Re: using snare of different material than shellpack

Many different snares. Never thought of them being consonant with the toms. Kick drum maybe, and marginally at that. Even when playing a snare with the wires off in a latin beat, it's so much...

Re: "Chameleon" drum selection

In those days Harvey's drums were pretty damped. But a 5-6" deep wood snare should do it.

I recently did a session where the studio had a 6" wood DW fitted with one of those Evans Genera Dry...

Re: Sound proofing Idea

Have to look into that UltraTouch stuff for bass traps where you want different densities.

Typical damping panels are made from Owens Corning 703 rigid fiberglass insulation. This is what you see...

Re: Gear fail - handled beautifully :)

I thought he was going to leave it on the snare. I picked that trick up from a Baltimore guy named Bryant Mills. Sounds like hand claps, great for a funk groove although that song is a bit more...
