Re: The worst gig of my life

I hate the attitude that the drumset is just a generic instrument and anybody can sit down and adjust it to their needs in five minutes and be fine.
I hate kit sharing, but it's inescapable. How...

Re: I'm going to see Billy Cobham live!

Cool. The man is a national treasure. Looks like he's not coming close to DC this time around.

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

I'm not claiming to be versed in the musical form. I am just saying that I disagree with the ethics of a lot of sampling that I hear. When I hear highly talented jazz musicians having their best work...

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

Yes, I aware that they are licensed, but in the vast majority of cases I think they are not. The Beastie Boys have been sued many times. I don't know if they paid Back Door for that bass line, but I...

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

And meanwhile you have rap bands just lifting recorded parts wholesale (although a lot of them get sued).

I heard a Massive Attack song that had a good chunk of Billy Cobham's Stratus, including...

Re: Blurred lines ripped off the "feel"

What's really crazy about this is the jury didn't even hear the original Marvin Gaye song. They had to hear a remake that didn't even have vocals.
This is apparently because of copyright issues.

Re: The modern history of the drumset

I think it's well-written. I don't disagree with anything there.
Liked the photos. It was interesting how Stewart Copeland brought small drums back into vogue.

Re: Guy downstairs goes mental when practicing e-drums

I have had great luck with Pearl mesh heads on regular drums, with ddrum triggers. The main issue for you is probably the bass drum. You can get the mesh head and put it on and trigger with that....

Re: My Band Frustrations

You didn't say if Joe is the singer, I am assuming he is. I think it's natural for the singer to have more say over songs (in a vocal band) because he has to sing them. That is something I have...

Re: Are E-kits only good for practicing at home?

I took my ancient Tama kit and put mesh heads on it with the triggers for quiet practice. When it comes time to gig I will switch out my good acoustic kit with the Tamas. I am going for an old...

Re: Are E-kits only good for practicing at home?

There is a prejudice against e-drums, no doubt about it. Everybody loves to hate them.
Ironically, these same people have no problem with an endless amount of digital manipulation to an acoustic...

Re: Another *&^%$# Bar Owner

The difference is, in most situations, is the bar owner collects the money. At the door and at the bar, unless it's a private party.
You might have invested more in recording gear, instruments, and...

Re: Another *&^%$# Bar Owner

A bar owner is in business to sell alcohol and attract people to the establishment. He's not there to supply you with an audience or help jump start the career of local musicians.

I have never...

Re: Nuggets of hard won wisdom

Things I have learned:
Not hitting a cymbal at the beginning of a new part or measure will often give that change more of an impact compared to hitting a cymbal.
If I can't seem to do things I used...

Re: Drumming as Art

This might sound odd...but try sitting down and playing abstract ideas. Like playing a drum solo about walking in a forest, or getting in a fight. Or winter into spring or something.

Re: Who "invented" the rock beat?

Steve Smith has a DVD on "History of the US Beat."
He says that when rock and roll first started recording, there were no rock and roll session drummers, only jazz guys. So they would "swing" the...

Re: It's hard to start a band, when you're a Drummer

I was always frustrated that I could never submit songs to my band. Through MIDI I am figuring out how to do so.
I used to compose a complex drum part in Cakewalk in the "staff view." Then I would...

Re: When soundmen attack

Soundman is one of those jobs where it is a prerequisite to be grumpy, similar to computer techs and auto mechanics.

I once got reamed out by a soundman for having two bass drums. He basically...

Re: Acrylic snares???? gen me up

I use the Crush 14" acrylic. I love the drum. Here is some video of it in a live context. This is when I just got it and was still dialing in the sound.

Re: The Drummer's Journal

Excellent! Man, that thing looks like a shit-ton of work.
I produced an indie mag. People don't realize the amount of effort and time it takes to do something that looks that good.
