12" Butternut

My friend Richard Jackson flew in from Costa Rica to buy a kit from me, just 4 toms and a kick. I was just assembling this snare drum as he was walking up to the shop. The snare sounded so good right...

Re: 30's Ludwig Snare rebirth

Pretty sure that is a rare wrap. And it looks in great shape other than some fading. Changing it would plummet the value of the drum, which is a beautiful collectible that also can be a great players...

Re: Double wall stave shell construction

Does not look like a "double wall" construction. It is very thick and beefed up with splines. I have experimented with similar build techniques but did not get very good results myself.

Re: How to fire a band member

Neutral place, all should be there and just be straight forward and honest about it. I would rather get straight truth instead of dwelling over what the real angle behind the game playing was. The...

Re: Snare drum finish

That being a steam bent shell, you have room to sand out the stain, it won't take off that much material, maple is very hard to hand sand though, so without a lathe like I have, or a multi tool with...

Re: Snare drum finish

Paint it.
I have tons of various wood grain drums, so it has to be something spectacular for leaving raw.
Doing this sunburst over some Butternut wood.

Re: different type of wood shells - how does it affect sound?

Thanks for clarifying the construction. I would now guess the thicker shell with no rerings would be a louder drum, maybe sharper attack whereas the traditional 3 ply with the rings would be a more...

Re: different type of wood shells - how does it affect sound?

Generally speaking, the harder wood will sound brighter, if you are looking for warm wood sound, look into a walnut shell. Ludwig makes a maple/walnut that is reasonably priced and sounds great.

Re: different type of wood shells - how does it affect sound?

They are both maple, so maybe they used different bearing edges. Seeing as they are both maple, why would you wonder if the species of wood is making a difference?

Re: Drummers with Chops who don't Play on the Beat, play fills at wrong time, etc.

I often record myself and do discover one bass drum beat in a song pulled back, not in the same pocket, yet I don't hear it while I am actually doing it. The rest of the song is tight as nails and in...

Re: Spalted Birch full kit build

Need to do some video editing (shortening) but got them done the night before going to record a song at Phase One in Toronto. Drums were amazing, the producer loved them, said he did not have to do a...

Re: 1st Stave Snare Build - Floating Maple/Ash

I like your second build. Looks like you got you table saw issue ironed out, had a lot of burn on the first snare. The trick to cutting stave angles is to use a thin kerf sawblade with minimal teeth,...

Re: Spalted Birch full kit build

It's 8". Not that bad. The norm is around 6", but I find that makes moving a mic around too restrictive.

Re: Spalted Birch full kit build

Yeah I noticed that too, another unplanned success lol. The segment ends match the hoops really well, and helps bridge the difference from the unfigured hoops to the the spalt figured she'll.

As...

Re: Spalted Birch full kit build

Getting them off the wet ground and out of log form stops the spalting . Very difficult to spalt boards, can be done but rarely can you achieve results like this. It is the fine balance of letting a...

Re: My New Oriollo Cast Bell Bronze Snare!!!

Truly a beast of a drum. I want one of these but also have a premonition that I will not use it much once I get it. I have a super heavy brass Pearl Reference that I thought would be the end all, but...

Re: Benefits of adjustable tension on snare butt plate

I like the DW units, for live gigging, the purpose or advantage is not the centering of the wires, but the versatility of 3 different tension presets at the flick of the lever. One song I use it is...

Walnut Stave

Built this a while ago, but was waiting to find some satin finish hoops. Did not find any so I bought some chrome die cast and roughed them up along with the throw off. Much better now. 13X7 Walnut...
