Re: music theory: a necessity for drummers
My feeling about music theory is that, while it's no substitute for creativity, it does provide a solid framework for problem solving, i.e. if something doesn't sound 'right', a grasp of the theory...

Re: Gig without a bassist!
Low-fi/two-piece bands are quite the thing at the moment. Depends what kind of music you play/what kind of sound you need but no bass player doesn't necessarily mean no band. The Doors/Cramps/Black...

Re: First Gig Blues
Band was fairly competent but the first gig wasn't perfect by any means - a bit of an ordeal, if I'm honest (although, as you say, people seemed to like it) - but it wasn't for want of preparation....

Re: First Gig Blues
Sorry to chime in with a negative note but, in all honesty, I'd run a mile rather than get up on stage to be a part of something I had no confidence or pride in. Playing live CAN push you forward (a...

Re: 10 lesser known but oft heard drummers
I've always had a soft spot for Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello's drummer); never likely to attract (no pun intended) a lot of attention but I like a certain amount of economy and restraint in creativity.

Re: How often do you break/drop your sticks?
I used to drop sticks fairly regularly and the worst thing about it was always the disorienting effect it had. I don't think you can ever really prepare for something so out-of-the-blue but I decided...

Re: New drummer: upgrade kit or cymbals first?
If you're looking to make an impact on the overall sound experience, cymbals and snare are the areas to invest in - it's easy, really: these are the bits of a drum kit that you hit for emphasis; toms...

Re: Ludwig Bronze
I have a Ludwig Bronze, acquired more by luck than judgment, but I'm not shopping for a snare drum anymore.

Re: Favorite Drummer?
Moon's the man; I like an 'anything can happen and it might fall apart at any moment but it'll still resolve itself by the end of the bar' kind of drummer. Outstanding technique and precision is...

Re: Let's talk about scams.
When money is paid up-front, this argument falls flat: if funds supplied for a purpose aren't used for that purpose then what you have is a fraudulent transaction. This is the whole point of up-front...

Re: Let's talk about scams.
Is this a fact? It was always my understanding that this was just televised small claims court and that the purpose is simply to establish liability. I further understand that it doesn't necessarily...

Re: Let's talk about scams.
I'm in the UK so I can't speak with any certainty about US law but I reckon that if a guy can prove that he's made a payment to someone for a specific purpose (i.e. the purchase of a drum), then the...

Re: The best thing about drumming
Drumming in a band is collaborative and creative and the joy is in the product; good musicians produce good songs. If slavish, note-perfect renditions of other people's stuff is your thing, I guess...

Re: nice Charlie Watts video
I think the interesting thing about Charlie's tour around his cymbals is that his on-stage set-up includes a china that's starting to crack (and I assume this is shot pre-gig).

Re: I keep losing my place...
I think you can get into a place where you worry about what's coming next and it throws you off. The only solution is to know the stuff you're playing so well that you don't have to think about it...

Re: Showmanship behind the drums!
From experience as a spectator, the one thing I've come to realise is that, however you look, you shouldn't look bored; looking like you're concentrating, working hard, etc. is all fine but I figure...
