Re: Are DW drums still cool?

DW's top of the line Collector's kits with exotic veneers are at about the same price point as Star, PHX and SQ2's.

Re: Hoop comparison video from Tama

Thanks Mike. If Tama keeps making these, I suspect we'll see different hoops before too much longer. My drum, not used all that often, is still very much playable. The hoop is sharp at many points...

Re: Heads over Shells

Head type and tensioning/tuning influences a drum's tone more than anything IMO. Bearing edges, hoop and hardware type, and shell thickness, depth and diameter all factor in of course. Ranking way...

Re: The New Tama Starclassic Walnut/Birch

...and with the announcement of Starphonic copper, Tama is hitting it out of the park in 2019! https://www.tama.com/usa/products/snare_drums/starphonic_copper.html

Why wait for NAMM to announce...

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

Mitch Mitchellís busy style of drumming never appealed to me personally. Any recordings of him where he let 20 seconds elapse without playing a fill? Nonetheless his style did appeal to those who...

Re: FU stroke!!!!!

Awesome to hear that the only strokes youíre worried about now are the ones bouncing off of those Evanís drumheads. Happy Christmas!

Re: Hoop comparison video from Tama

I LOVE this drum but like yours, my rims are taking a beating, and are starting to, for lack of a better word, dent up. Now I'm not an especially hard hitter and none of my other 25 or so snares have...

Re: 15 inch snare?

What do you mean it's a shame? Drum hardware and drums even at an intermediate price point are built so much better than high end stuff from yesteryear. Quality is more consistent and better...

Re: No GAS

I can relate. I have five high end kits and 26 incredible snare drums (ok 25 that are incredible). More cymbals than I can count. For a guy who has played only five fill in gigs in 2018, I need to...

Re: Maple/mahogany and Birch/mahogany sound characteristics

All things being equal (hoops, lugs, ply number, etc.), you won't be able to tell the difference between different hybrid wood species blends in ply construction. Any differences in tone will likely...

Re: How do I tell my friend that his expensive custom handmade snare is shit?

If your friend loves the drum and it gives him the sounds heís looking for, leave it be. Sound is subjective and as bad as it may be, it wonít likely affect the listenersí experience.

Thrilled to hear this Andy. No doubt that kit sounded terrific, dumbed down or not.

Re: Dunnett acrylic kit really worth $4000?

That kick drum deserves to sink to the bottom of the ocean where it can do no damage. Should be heavy enough to drop straight down.

Re: Anyone know what's up with Bo?

He's been away in rehab. His loved ones, concerned that he went through his children's college funds to support his drum addiction, staged an intervention. While in rehab, Bo has lost access to the...

Re: Worst expensive snare you've ever owned?

So I owned a Joyful Noise 6.5x14 soared copper snare which just sounded harsh to my ears, and didn't like to stay in tune. The buyer I found for it agreed but for the price I offered, took a chance...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

Iím a bit of a snare collector and there are several manufacturers/builders who build great drums that Iíd like to one day acquire: Oriollo, Keplinger, Noble&Cooley and Unix to name a few. While I...

Re: Powdercoating aluminum and effect on sound?

I own a powder-coated VK magnesium snare which largely tracks with your description. As a general rule I find steel and related metalsí overtones far less desirable than brass, copper, aluminum etc....

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

If I may paraphrase: Don’t get hung up on the type of wood used in ply drum construction. It just doesn’t make all that much of a difference.

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

American drum companies appeal to Americansí patriotism and nationalistic pride when pushing ďmade in the USAĒ campaigns. The reality is, place of manufacture has no bearing on a drumís quality. The...
