Re: Ludwig Keystone series

The Keystones took *top* honors at the summer NAMM.... so, yes, I'd say they're pretty nice drums.

Two configs, four pretty cool finishes. They're not out quite yet... so you'll not see much on...

Re: Pork Pie "Big Black Bob" Review

Maybe a moon gel or wet napkin? Dirt cheap compared to spending $100 on die cast hoops.

The key with the DrumDial is to get the head seated, and then tune *up*. Once you get a little tension...

Re: Pork Pie "Big Black Bob" Review

That looks like a seam to me. I intentionally didn't look too close at mine for just this reason!.

Re: Wraps or finished shell. What floats your boat & why.

A poorly applied wrap (even with contact cement) can absolutely kill a drum..... which is why I don't trust myself to ever cover a drum again. :-)

...but wrap alone won't kill a drum. Even my...

Re: Ludwig Centennial Snare Drum. Anyone used it before?

Bonham used a Ludwig Supraphonic 402 (Aluminum).... wood likely isn't going to get you there. Plus, cheap wooden snares seem to be a bit more of a gamble than metal ones (IMHO).

Keep your eyes...

Re: (Cheaper) Alternative to Ludwig Black Beauty

How does stainless compare to aluminum, brass, or plan-ol' steel?

As for cheaper than a Black Beauty, there's lots out there. If it's gotta be brass, I throw the Pork Pie Big Brass out. Basically...

Re: Question about rubber gasket under imperial lugs

To really open the drum up, try 1.6mm hoops like the vintage snares.

As for lug splay. Doesn't affect anything but looks.....

Re: Pork Pie "Big Black Bob" Review

I've played the Black Magic and World Max drums side by side with a Black Beauty at our local-ish drum shop. Tuned the same, it's a really comparable sound to the Black Beauty.

I think the...

Re: Keller drum shell prices

I've done this, too. Had a notebook full of numbers in the pre-website days... then Excel spread sheets after.

Price difference in shells probably comes from overhead.

My advice is to shop...

Re: Pork Pie "Big Black Bob" Review

Ants at a picnic...

The World Max shells *do* get you in the right ball park.... and yes, I have played the big names in the brass snare market side to side.

Is it a Black Beauty? No. Doesn't...

Re: Gretsch Brass Snares

Check out here (http://www.indoorstorm.com/Gretsch_Drums_Gretsch_Snare_Drums-c-7_94_95.html).

Never dealt with them, but they do have some sound samples. Always a grain of salt to be taken, but...

Re: Recommendations for a good metal snare for Jazz

Joe Morello used COB Ludwig's during the DB Quartet's heyday. The 5" Super/Supraphonic are just wonderful drums.

Re: Pork Pie "Big Black Bob" Review

Great playing! What heads are you using? What sizes are your Renown's?

My Pork Pie Brass finally came in a few weeks ago.... so my '67 Supraphonic gets to take a break.

The Pork Pie Brass is...

Re: Ludwig Classic Maple Question

Ludwig has other mounts as well.... or you could buy the mount separately (they're actually stupid cheap!) and install yourself.

The standard position works pretty well. You don't need to keep the...

Re: NAMM 2010 Ludwig Booth

I think wraps say "My pockets are deep enough that I can get a kit in a wacky finish, just for fun." :-)

Re: my beautiful, new ludwig w/ supra-phonic snare!

Sweet kit! I'm jealous of that Supra. Just the way I want one: tube lugs, P86, and anniversary badge.

I'd stash any anniversary related head, and replace with their non-anniversary equivalent. ;-)...

Re: Vintage Ludwig Set.. is this a good deal?

Is that Black Panther wrap? Maybe there's Psych Red or Citrus Mod underneath... :-)

Definitely snag that kit.

Re: Jazz Drums and Number of Plies

Think about what *kind* of wood, bearing edges, and overall sizes you want out of a set of drums..

Also consider what kind of sound you're after.... there's a lot of different kinds of music that...

Re: Hearing Problems

Get a pair of Hearo's.

Somehow I didn't completely wreck my hearing from years and years of loud playing... though I do have trouble hear conversations whenever there's much background noise.

Re: which drums are made in USA & Canada?

You're also covering the bill for their endorsers and making things like 23" bass drums.

Re: which drums are made in USA & Canada?

As far as boarder taxes/duties go, is it the "name" of the brand, or the actual point of manufacture? In other words, would an American company's import line count as American or "other"?.... since...

Re: ludwig centennials

It's a bummer that they're discontinuing them.... just when they seem to be catching on.

If they had shallower BD's like a 16", I'd have grabbed a Centennial kit in a heartbeat.

Re: Jack White's drum setup

I'm diggin' this set up! I like the remote BD thing!

As for the original question, the only thing that doesn't seem right with Jack's set-up is the low height. I find it hard to roll with the...

Re: Should I sell my first set of drums?

My first kit got traded in for peanuts..... back then I needed *anything* to help offset the cost of new drums.

Re: Ludwig RIMS mount

Go to Ludwig's site and download the parts catalogs. Find the size you're after, and Google the p/n and "Ludwig". I've found that drumsonsale.com has pretty good prices on Ludwig parts.

As far as...
