Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Gee. nobody questions the talent or great musicianship....does anyone question the greatness of Peyton Manning? Look at how the man prepares and works with a team...as a team..as bandleader, yet...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Geddy: I was in this band first....I'm the bandleader; just watch and listen, Neil, and come in when I hit the 1

Neil: (empty throne, Doppler effect on voice) See ya, good luck

Geddy:...

Re: The false perception of Luan

I agree that it does not take the top regarded or most costly woods for a drum to sound great. On a related note, I purchased a Luan-based Epiphone SG a couple years back and was and am very pleased...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I picked up the Sonor Jojo Mayer perfect balance pedal....single kick. Very very nice pedal. With my larger dogs, it's still not on the level of the Axis Longs for heel toe....but very useable. Great...

Re: Anyone suggest good drum bags?

I have some Beato, Kaces, Protection Racket and I'm pleased with all of them. For floor toms I will order slightly oversized depth to try and accommodate leaving the legs on. I will also say that...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Precisely....pros are team players. I know nothing about the bandleader....nor will I indict his behavior, but it is not professional teamwork and ultimately bands work and sound best with...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

I have to say again, I just don't see an issue....the job is to play in tune, on time and as part of the team. To entertain and add value. If it sounds good, it is good and the methods don't matter....

Re: Adjusting to Acoustic Bass Drums

Hmmm....I do not notice this same thing myself. Most days I practice on my acoustic kit in the early afternoon, take several hours away and then work on some things on my electric kit at night. I do...

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Excellent question.....I would say it does, yes. Knowing the guitar intros, etc, allows you to have both a rhythmic key as well as a chord change and melodic key.

Re: Simple beat??? Not so much!!

I'm shooting from the hip here, but sounds like we are talking about a Sweet Home Alabama kinda thing here...though the "Artimus Open" is very pronounced.

Damn, Artimus was slick!

Re: Hearing the upbeat as the downbeat

Honestly, no.

I will soften that by saying I have some real weaknesses when it comes to actually playing anything on an instrument.....but one area God saw fit to bless was picking up quickly on...

Re: Songs composed by drummers

Well, I think it's easier than you think. For instance, you can write a song based on the underlying rhythm....and arrange it using those Rhythm blocks. One for intro, verse, chorus, bridge,...

Re: 420 musicians onstage

I worked several years back in the 80s with a happy go lucky guitar/keys swing man that also had the voice of David Byron....he would always be completely shitfaced on a combination of Ganga and a...

Re: Drumming without shoes - caution

Exactly....that feedback and feeling of control is missing when the sock is on. I agree.

Re: Is Tama a Bad Company?

Agreed. Patents are a very interesting and potentially slippery slope for the reasons you outlined. Costly, not always providers of tangible value and all that mess being involved defending or...

Re: Is Tama a Bad Company?

A good product is a good product. I would always prefer to get something from the original original equipment manufacturer (OOEM.... :-) ), but, ultimately I can't imagine we would know the true...

Re: Drumming without shoes - caution

I've been playing barefoot for 5 years....skipped maybe 30 out of those roughly 1800 days....practice is always 90 minutes of full go; Do not stop, pass go, collect $200 or take a whiz. I also do a...

I'm really not a dw fanboy, but I do appreciate what they do....and they make a very nice product. But let's not fool ourselves and negatively spin ourselves up into thinking it is marketing that is...

Re: Tempos - Too Fast?

There is a correct and proper answer to tempo, and that question was answered in the studio. I'm sure many here have played with tempo in the studio to achieve the feel you were looking for, then the...

I love saying this quote in a band setting....which is a great quote....just to see the facial reactions. Very entertaining.

Because I'm a newer drummer, I find myself playing drums in less...

Re: Tempos - Too Fast?

All the time, yes. The key is to work with musicians that understand how to correct and/or be corrected. There is nothing wrong with discussing this stuff on the front end or snapping it out at a...
