Re: Trad or matched? completely torn here

I say learn BOTH.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages for various situations in playing. You spend all day weighing up the pros and cons of both and giving yourself a brain haemorrhage...

Re: The Richard Davis Interview...

Big thanks for these - Davis is one of my favs. One hell of a sound and his work on Out to Lunch is incredible.

Re: how to give a 3 yr old direction on drumming

Bringing the concept of disciplined playing into the equation this early on may be detrimental.

I think you should encourage him with playing creatively and let him to do his own thing for now....

Re: age to start drumming

Couldn't agree more.

My point about progression was assuming hard work was a given - some people do pick up things quicker, but if you both reach the same end point what does time matter?

Re: age to start drumming

People progress at different rates. What age or how early you started playing shouldn't matter. Tony Williams was playing with Miles Davis at 18 whilst Steve Gadd started making ripples at round 30....

Re: Herbie hancock's new quintet

Thank God there's no bloody jazz harmonica player. I saw him a year or two ago where he had a jazz harmonica player with him - it turned the whole damn gig into some nightmarish jazz cafe experience...

Re: Getting "yelled" at onstage

Just as a little sidenote:

The absolute best piece of musical advice I EVER got was from an ex-drum teacher. I had made a mistake during a big band piece and was complaining about how it had...

Re: playing uptempo jazz with heel down on hi-hat

I admit I'm usually a heel up player on the hi-hat, but when it comes to fast tempos a teacher of mine taught me that it's more energy saving to play heel down. In addition, there's to be none of the...

Re: jazz with vibes

Bobby Hutcherson is a personal favourite of mine.
Check out his album 'Oblique' - absolutely phenomenal. Also his work with Jackie McLean is absolutely superb, especially 'Destination... Out!'

Re: Matched Grip vs. Traditional Grip: Pro's and Con's?

As a medical student - I'm quite confident in saying that this isn't true although, admittedly, I am no expert in such matters.
Most of those diseases have many factors contributing to them,...

Re: Bad Advice

Studying a broad range of styles will show you connections between different genres which you can use to your advantage.

Re: Tony Williams

Dude - I agree, especially about Out To Lunch, but Destination Out! has Roy Haynes on it, not Tony.

Re: Lack of Excitement Live

You guys just have to feel the music. Just let it flow. You never had a good dance? You never rocked out? That's pretty much the key to it - just going for it. However, in contrast to what an earlier...

Re: Has anyone studied Jim Blackley's books

I've worked out of Syncopated Rolls, though I still need to learn to use it to its full extend.
It's wonderful stuff - so much stuff you can do with it, but I'd advice seeing a teacher who is...

Re: Drummers who play too much!

For me - it's whatever the music dictates. I think The Colonel said it right with the whole Elvin thing - I wouldn't call it overplaying, it's all just integral to the music. Hell, it IS the music....

Re: Best Drum Track Of All Time

The whole Sun Ship album - Elvin Jones. Intensity at its best.

Surely the real question should be Africans or Americans?
