Getting back to the drums after a long break...

I have not played drums for about two months and I am thinking of getting into some sort of practice routine to maintain and improve technique so that, when I get back to playing with my stage band...

Re: Ear Plugs and Cans - Not Just For Protection

+1 Ear muffs are like auto-eq. I prefer them to ear plugs and they allow me to put earphones under them and play along to music which. So then I am hearing my drumkit and the track I am playing...

Re: Standardized Notation

There is no one standard drumkit notation but since I have seen many notation systems they are easy to understand.

As is pointed out some institutions have their own standard systems (e.g. PAS)

Re: Consistent rim shots

I have learned to do rimshots on instinct (so if I want a rimshot on a backbeat I get a rimshot).

It came about from when I was having drum lessons for the first time with a particular teacher and...

Re: Fulcrum Help!

These are instinctive for experienced drummers but a worry for beginners. Good stick grip develops over time although it does need a little conscious attention for a beginner for a while.

Re: Smallest Kits in Metal

Jon Karel from The Number Twelve Looks Like You uses a small kit - 4 drums and a few cymbals.

Re: Tuning - how you get it right

The good thing about tuning to certain intervals is that if you ever strike two drums together you can make sure that they sound harmonious (consonant) rather than clashing (dissonant).

Re: Music, drumming and mental illness

I would not completely disregard the advice of the medical profession.

It is important to get a second opinion from other doctors when it comes to such matters.

The therapeutic properties of...

Re: Improving your time

Confidence is definitely a part of it.

Being relaxed - but alert - when drumming is great for good timing.

I will also stress that good technique is part of it. I notice how drumming with my...

Re: Double bass noob help

I have the same set of pedals and am also a beginner to double-bass drumming.

The pedals (although pretty cheap ones) are often not the problem. My drum teacher can play fast rhythms on the same...

Re: How can I tune my drums to sound like this?

Big deep drums are good to get that boomy sound.

I would use REMO Fiberskyns on batter side like the one in this video:

very warm sound.

Re: Drumming with fingers missing

Does your friend wear prosthetic fingers?

If so perhaps the sticks could be positioned into a grip position with such fingers.

If not, then you will just have to get your student to adapt, to...

Re: Easy jazz songs to drum to?

Canteloupe Island by Herbie Hancock is quite easy on drumkit (if you wish to play like the recording).

Re: Tension

I actually learned to that, it is now a habit and I rarely muck up a rimshot now.

Polly, I think confidence as well as poor technique contribute to this tension...

Re: What's this technique called?

I have also heard "cymbal wash" - but the term does not necessarily have to refer to a the kind with the crescendo (build up in volume).

Mallets are great for doing this thing.

Re: Is this a problem?

Musicians in general are not exactly renowned for their punctuality.

Drumming for you is a passion, keep it under your control to make sure it does not become a problem.

Re: Wood vs other materials

Remember it is not just the material of shell that is a deciding factor, a new set of heads tuned well makes a drum sound fantastic.

Not bolting a lot of hardware to the shell also tends to stuff...

Re: Drumming expression

Interesting discussion.

You see drums are not like other instruments that can taken on a vocal quality or sing and so can be much more directly related to emotions. eg. guitar, theremin, piano,...

Re: Going to do some pit work for a musical

I used a small 4-piece setup (1 up, 1 down) + cowbell, ride, china, crash and hats.

I used my own drums and hardware and borrowed cymbals.

The band was in a pit right under the stage and...
