Re: Do you plan your fills?

As a youngin' upstart back in the '80s, I really liked the way Neil Peart had all his fills so mapped out. I don't do this myself but appreciate that he did.

What I do as a nod to what he did is...

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

I see what you did there, Larry. Haha!

That is the fly in the ointment - all surfable waves crash in the end...

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

I like the idea of the band flowing around the pulse and riding the time as surfing a wave.

Re: How about a 22x13" ?

Man, that's one of the coolest looking setups I've ever seen! Looks like a blast to play. Hmmm ...

I've always liked the look of of clear batters and resos on a kick. I just think it looks cool...

Re: Over exuberance - a time & a place?

Exuberant, or over exuberant? One has its place. Let's not confuse the two :)

Re: The legendary sweet spot

I can sit with my drums and carefully get them into their sweet "range" but that doesn't usually translate well when playing with the band, at which point I pull the drum key back out and crank to...

Re: Drummers you thought sucked,but...

When I was a teen, Phil Rudd was the easy target. Now when I listen back to him all I hear is his massive pocket and wonder how I could have ever missed it. I think my epiphany with him came when...

Re: Double bill - a first for me - what could possibly go wrong?

I did a double bill a few weeks ago. I've done them only a couple times in the past and was never quite comfortable with the idea of it becoming the "Mike show" so I usually avoid it.

But this...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

Hey Larry, I was listening! When I first saw her, via link from this forum, I became a believer. She's the real deal, IMO. And she's savvy with her own marketing. Didn't see the show last night,...

Re: drum fill friday

I only knew the Manu Katche fill (one of my all-time favorite fills!). But never heard any of the others. I had a small argument with myself over whether it was Steve Gadd or Peter Erskine playing...

Re: Rick Allen (Def Leppard)

I learned he didn't play on those records a few years back on this very forum (from DED?), and in that same thread, learned that Frank Beard didn't play on Eliminator.

You'd be hard pressed to...

Re: Does playing covers change you?

Sometimes I feel like the poster boy for originals-only bands. It's true that I've never played in a cover band, but I play covers all the time as part of my own practicing fun. That's where a huge...

Re: Is Don Henley relevant here?

I remember Modern Drummer getting a ton of hate mail back in the '80s after running a cover story on him, so this isn't exactly news. It was a crock then just as it is now. Don was the man. Who cares...

Re: Are there fewer demands for a drummer now, than before?

This is all true from my POV.

Also true that technology has been putting drummers out of business since the early '80s. While it's easier then ever to stitch together a perfect performance in the...

Re: How many of you are playing for tips?

Sure, if you're in a cover band or a band playing standards, this works. Originals bands are a different animal though. Pay on an originals gig is based on the door so there's no way to know ahead of...

Re: Neil Peart

Artists have been waxing philosophical on this for ages: when does a painter know when to stop, put the brush down, and call it good? The sooner you can do that, the sooner you can move on to the...

Re: Alan Dawson: How Do You Sound? vs How Do You Look?

For me it's really both. There's the parts being played and there's the performance of those parts. It could be Dave Grohl or Steve Gadd; seeing someone playing "in the zone" is where my money's at....

Where was that? Before William Goldsmith? Cool.

Re: Alan Dawson: How Do You Sound? vs How Do You Look?

I remember when Nevermind first came out and being impressed with Grohl's drumming on it since it was so much tighter and groovier than what came before it.

But when I saw him for the first time...

Re: Why do blues bands want "rock & roll" drummers?

I really like this sentiment. I read the OP the same way and thought the same thing. Basically, the OP has a clear idea of how he wants to lay it down, and while that might not be what some other...

Re: Pork Pie 14x6.5, Black over brass? Anybody?

I'm certain that it's less than 1.5 mm by at least 0.1 mm. I'll be checking back tonight to see what you measured, so no dilly dally - I'm curious to know what it really is!

If we're taking bets,...

Re: Pork Pie 14x6.5, Black over brass? Anybody?

Actually, this isn't the case.

I had a Sensitone black on brass and it was a 1.5 mm shell, which is about as thick as you'll see for a rolled shell (my Joyful Noise brass was about 1.6). An LB417...

Re: How many of you are playing for tips?

I play gigs because it's still fun after all these years. Any pay is just gravy.

Played a gig Saturday (my 2nd as a bass player) and didn't get paid anything. I barely noticed that fact, tbh.

Next in line is the soul-crushing humiliation of being a thread killer.

Thoughtful post -> crickets.

Re: Ever look back at videos of yourself playing and cringe?

I'm a lot more comfortable watching vids of myself than listening to audio-only playback. I'd have it the other way around it I could pick. Oh well.
