Re: Do you plan your fills?

It depends on what genre the music is, as well has how the rest of the band feels about the song.

Re: Can you turn an "intermediate" kit into a "pro" kit?

Exactly.

It was always funny seeing Tama selling the Swingstars as entry level while showing off all the name pros who were touring with the Imperialstars, even though it was the same shell!

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

The band is a car, and I am the engine.

Sure people are looking at the flashy exterior and paint job (i.e. lead singer and/or lead guitar player), but it's the engine that is making the car move!...

Re: Is live music dead?

Bummer.
Back in like 94/95, I used to hang out there darn near every weekend. 3 stages, and lots of great bands went through there.

Re: Is live music dead?

That started happening years ago too in SF during the .com boom when some club owners found out they could make more money renting out their space to tech companies than from running a club.

Re: Is live music dead?

It's a variety of factors.

1) Technology eliminated the need for many gigs. From when jazz and rock became a thing up through the 60's and into the 70's, bands could gig at strip clubs, dinner...

Re: Neil Peart

Remo does make them.

DW has been making 23" bass drums fro several years now, and apparently, they did contact Remo before putting them into production.

Now, how many stores actually stock a...

Re: Can you turn an "intermediate" kit into a "pro" kit?

Many intermediate of today would be considered pro 30-40 years ago.

Many pro kits of 30-40 years ago would barely be considered above beginner today.

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

In Hals interview with "I Hit That" podcast, Hal makes it apparent he and Carol remember things differently.

Re: Has anyone read the book "The Wrecking Crew"?

Yes, I read Hal's book many years ago.

I'd say it's a great read.

I think it's really interesting just how much the life of a drummer has changed.

Hal talking about being the house drummer...

Re: Drummers you thought sucked,but...

I was never much into Watts until at some point (late 80's, early 90's??) I saw an interview with Keith Richards on TV where he discussed Watts.

He said what he loved about Watts was they can be...

Re: Crowdfunding Campaign to Compensate "Amen Break" Owner

From what I can tell, all this is saying, yeah, the drummer still doesn't own their own playing, the singer does.

Re: Over exuberance - a time & a place?

I don't see any Over exuberance.

No head banging, no stick twirls, no stick flips, no jumping up and down on the drum set, no arms flailing high in the air.

Seems pretty reserved to me, save...

Re: Whiplash Oscar win - will it spur sudden interest in "jazz drumming"?

I don't know.

Did Chariots of Fire inspire people to take up running?

Did No Country for Old Men inspire people to take up drug running and killing?

Did Black Swan inspire people to take...

And it's what I like about you.
