Miked on top of a 6.5" or deeper...

Re: Jazz drummers: How do you work on soloing?

1) OK. I’ll agree to disagree based on personal definitions.

2) In composition, there are various ways of echoing a priori musical stimuli. One is quotation, Wherein a musician quotes a passage...

Re: Jazz drummers: How do you work on soloing?

1) I'm having a problem understanding how practicing playing a musical instrument solo is not a musical situation? Could you elaborate please?

2) Solos can be either reactive or proactive. You...

Re: Jazz drummers: How do you work on soloing?

Re: Rules in Music

Debussy was known for challenging many of the canons of the musical establishments of his time. This statement encourages other musicians to do the same.

Re: New Bill Bruford Conversation

Two statements caught my attention:

"On the whole, too little is expected from drummers, and consequently they expect too little from themselves."

An interesting angle on the argument about...

Re: In the studio

Sounds like an interesting marketing campaign. Put up promo snippets of all three mixes back to back, then let the buyers choose. It will be like a poll. Then whoever gets the lowest sales after a...

Re: Drummerís Place In Band

Beyond playing your instrument with proficiency, a drummer CAN be involved in other functions such as songwriting, repertoire, logistics, or management, just like any of the other members. So if to...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

Since my adolescence, I've honestly only liked a small percentage of what passes for "popular" music. To me there were proportionately just as many songs which I wasn't the least bit interested in in...

Re: If Jazz was as popular as Rock ?

The question is too general. First of all, what kind of jazz are we talking about? In the pre-war swing era, jazz was the popular music of the time, staging could get elaborate, sound reinforcement...

Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

I was in between teaching jobs, and my country was going through a titanic change of political leadership. A college buddy and his brother asked me to join a jazz quartet. We did two weeks of racking...

Re: Drum/music Terminology: Downbeat

AFAIK, in 4/4 time signature:

1st beat = DOWNBEAT because Western music conductors commonly signal it with a downward motion. In Western music often the strongest and most accented beat in the...

Re: Have you ever have someone in the audience tells you your playing a song wrong?

I was at a college jazz band reunion rehearsal, to play one of my old pieces. One of the other alumni drummers sitting next to me, a part-time teacher in the school extension program, kept pestering...

Re: The Cheap Snare Thread

I got a Pearl Short Fuse 10x4.5 complete with clamp and L-arm for about US$50. It got me so addicted to "auxiliary" snares that I got a 12x5 and a 13x5 to go with it. Somebody stop me!

Re: First jam tonight. Advice? Tips?

1) I agree with most, find a groove and stay with it. No need for pyrotechnics at a first gig.

2) Most changes in dynamics or fills usually happen during the transitions between sections. So use...
