Re: Top 10 "household name" drummers
The only reason I had ever seen Ed Shaughnessy's name was that I used to look at all of the signature drumsticks in the catalogue when I was 13. I always saw his name, and continued looking.
As...

Re: Top 10 "household name" drummers
Not known for his drumming(though he did play on a lot of hits): Marvin Gaye. If some of these guys are allowed on the list, then he definitely deserves to be on it.

Re: What makes it real?
For me, each company(that isn't no name) has a kit in its catalogue that says, "This is the way we think drums are supposed to be built." This may not be the most expensive kit in their catalogue,...

The more I listen to this, the more I agree with you. It's unbelievable how much of an influence this thread alone has had on what jazz I listen to.

I had never heard this before. Listening to it reminds me of drinking an entire pot of coffee in a short period of time. I'm captivated.

I think the arts have enough trouble getting funding and this incident would have caused trouble for another project or potentially your own- you did the right thing Bo.

Depends on where you are. If you don't already have it, get a copy of John Riley's The Art of Bop Drumming- there are a fair amount of tracks on the cd that are perfect for someone trying to learn...

Re: Got to try a Gretsch kit last night
Those 57 Renown Maples are pretty stellar. When they marked those down I snatched one up and I don't think I'll buy another set of drums for at least 5 more years.

I've been going through sidemen's discography of various albums and found this one. Jaki Byard is always great, and dare I mention Alan Dawson?

Re: Gretsch Renown: Maple vs '57
The Gretsch logo is built into the chevrons and isn't removable. They're merely a thin aluminum material and bend very easily. There aren't any badges on my kit now that I've removed the chevrons,...

Re: Gretsch Renown: Maple vs '57
Yes, you can remove the chevrons on the '57, but I don't think you're going to be able to get it back on(I had to bend mine significantly to get them off, but I didn't care). This is what my '57 bop...

Re: Sorry, I've undone the vibe.
As the owner of both a 22" Bounce Ride and a Ludwig Atlas flat base stand, I can honestly say that it works quite well and I've never felt like it wasn't sturdy enough.
