Re: Trimmed down kits

Form follows function. Horses for courses.

My stripper is bass, snare, 13" K hats, and an 18" Dream Contact crash/ride. No toms. Great rig for folksy, roots/Americana/country. Brilliant fit in a...

Re: Help - Meeting up with Guitarist

I like the open mic/jam thing when I'm not sure. The music store bit has potential as well.

There can be some real disappointments on Craigslist. There can also be good folks.

Re: How do I get out of the "drumming blues"?

Set up a different rig at home. Example: Place hi hat pedal under opposite foot, use brushes on the snare, and just any one cymbal that is NOT your ride. No toms, no bass. Play along with a recording...

Re: Do you ever stand back from your drums...

Mine aren't always set up, so it's all the more alluring when they are.

I sometimes ogle guitars as well. Oh yeah, motorcycle too. Come to think of it, I'm surrounded by beauty.

A drum...

Re: When Your Band Won't Gig

So odd...

I played in a band a couple years back that talked about the need to gig, and actually booked gigs.

The problem for me was that they skipped too many rehearsals. It was a five-piece,...

Re: Yamaha Drums

Drum Center of Portsmouth had a beautiful six piece about three weeks ago. It had an 18" kick, and they were kind of salt and pepper sparkle. Gorgeous.

Re: Tuning "experts" mini rant

Now I know who all of the drummer jokes come from.

I think sticker boy even said something like "it doesn't really matter on the bass".

Of course, why listen when you can feel... the Force...

Re: Little Jazz Drumset

A friend of mine recently acquired a Silverstar birch ply kit with a 16" kick drum.
I got a few minutes of play time on it, and it was very satisfying. And this was tuned up with factory heads. I...

Re: A Possible Gig with Acoustic Guitars - A Query

+1 on rods/rutes. Don't rule out brushes. I use dampening rings too in small coffee-house settings. This is where the K Light Flat Ride excels. I also place a large felt on the top of the high hat...

Re: Yamaha bop kit

I put a Gibralter lift on an 18" TCM Yamaha. It's a little fussy at initial set-up, but it does what you need for about $20. PITA: can't zip the soft case over it.

Re: Can memory locks be sexy?

Didn't Elvis Costello say that "writing about music is like dancing about architecture".

I mean, who hasn't done that, right?

I think they're elegant to say the least, and I'll even give you...

Re: Toms with specific pitch - is this a problem

What intervals do you between your kick, toms and snare?
How are you tuning your resonant heads relative to your batters?

If you're not thinking of your tuning in these terms, you're likely at a...

Re: Drummers Brains Are Actually Different

I wonder if melody awareness enjoys the same correlation. I suspect this is the case.

Apologies to you rappers.

Re: Should I give up this hobby for drumming?

I don't like the thought that any activity so beneficial should be sacrificed. But, it is your life, and you need to take care of yourself.

I never watch television. It's a useless time suck....

Re: Are you a drum person or a cymbal person

I feel that the combination of resonances or vibrations from all that gear to be soothing and meditative. This is especially true when the kit is well tuned, and the cymbals blend effectively with...

Re: Posture

Try maintaining taut abs instead of "sitting up straight'. Not tight cranked flexing, but engaged continuously. You'll find it harder to slouch, and easier to breathe. Also, your hits will be more...

Re: Warm Wood Snare

In my quest for a similar drum I bagged a Yamaha MCA 14x5 for two hundred bucks. I think it fits the bill nicely, and the quality is excellent. It may be easier to find than less common woods, and...

Re: Keeping time when no one else is...

You have to keep it simple.

Tell him to lock onto your (snare, or hat, or kick, or SOMETHING) just one piece. Snare is good bet for lots of stuff. Just keep reminding him to listen and lock on. He...

Re: Other musicians' view of drums.

It's funny: I never got the bug to learn to play the drums until I broke through the riddle of how to tune a kit. Once that happened, hammer down!
I like musical drumming. There are guys who wail...

Re: How do you not hear your bass drum?

I'm thinking there are many variables at play here.
Experience tells me the first suspect would be bandmates yet to develop an ear to support a functional stage mix.
Second suspect would be...
