Re: Always sounding bad when practicing

I actually went out to the car 2 days ago around 8:30am (early for me since I only just started College), and a lady walked past and said "Is that you I hear jamming?" Now, it took me a moment to...

Re: What technique changed your drumming dramatically?

Forcing myself to develop French grip (I put it off for a good 10-15 years depending on when you count from). It's done wonders for my overall technique, and now I'm actually building some REAL...

Re: Problems with double bass groove(s)

If you can play synchronised 8th notes with your right hand on the hats along with your right foot, then do that, and then add your left foot into the pattern.

If you can't play those 8th notes...

Re: Always sounding bad when practicing

Argh, so many things to say.

OP: Forget about what your brother says, UNLESS it has actual merit. Prove this to yourself by recording yourself and listening. Pay attention to your timing. Some...

Re: Tuning toms to octaves

I remember I tried tuning toms to notes (not necessarily intervals) in the past.

Then I decided that was relatively pointless and just started tuning them so they sound as good as possible,...

Re: Drummers are the smartest musicians

Wait, I thought that being a drummer was all about being as awesome as possible?

Are you telling me that I'm supposed to do it to get all the chicks?

Bugger that, I'll keep aiming for pure...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I totally agree. I absolutely love what Virgil does, just like I love what Colaiuta, Weckl and Kollias do. But from the purest musical standpoint, technical advancement and just pure ability,...

Re: Drummers around 5'6" - What size drums do you have?

Well, I'm 5'8" now, but I certainly wasn't when I started playing drums.

I have always - bar when I had my Mapex Venus Series kit with a 20" kick - had 22" kicks.

The number one problem with...

Re: Why is it so hard for the band to follow me?!?!

Lots of good advice in here already.

As someone who once had to try and assist a group of vocalists at a church with learning a song (that they never managed to master and as such was never...

Re: Using less hat

Drumming is an art form, it is expression.

While we are bound by the rule of keeping solid time, and while there are aspects of drumming related to dynamics that should be obeyed to sound good,...

Ultimate mega speed/control/timing warmup

Now that I have your attention, first and foremost what I will present here has taken years of stuffing around, research and frustration to reach.

A bit of background: Speed has always been an...

Re: Why linear?

I've always seen linear playing (especially within fills) as a way to further develop your coordination and timing between all four limbs, with the added bonus that you can make some incredible...

Re: First ever Ebay buys - Meinl Byzance and Brady Jarrah / Banksia (?) ply.... and I'm in love

Hey Wombat, sorry for the late reply.

I have this video with my old band where I'm using the Sleishman at a gig. Unfortunately I don't have a better recording as I used the a different snare for...

Feel free to read this link:

I'm not going to argue the point. I simply...

Re: First ever Ebay buys - Meinl Byzance and Brady Jarrah / Banksia (?) ply.... and I'm in love

Man, if I was actually a regular at these forums I would have been in here a week ago dribbling over your new stuff!

I love Jarrah, I have a 14"x6.5" stave Sleishman snare and it is killer! And...

Re: Completely Gutted! (Warning: Graphic Images)

No, no, no. Bleach does not kill mould. It bleaches it. Literally, it turns it transparent. It doesn't kill it.

Vinegar (I use it undiluted for maximum devastation) is the best cheap solution...

Re: Anyone skilled with making drumless tracks?

Just be aware that there is no magic wand to remove drums from an existing mix. It sometimes works with removing vocals because they're generally panned dead centre, but even that is no perfect...

Re: Drummers you like on youtube

He's actual an old friend and fellow student of mine!

He was a finalist in the Billy Hyde drummers playoffs a few times and won it in 2006, I think it was. He's always been a fantastic player!

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

This reminded me. I saw him at the Drumscene Live event in 2009 or 2010, I think it was. He played with Derek Roddy and another guy whose name escapes me at the moment. I was really keyed up to...

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I don't care much for Buddy Rich. Plus, he has bad posture :P. Sure, he pioneered one or two things, but watching him play gets old pretty quickly. IMO there are much better modern drummers. THAT...

Re: Double bass practice idea?

I didn't mean to imply that it wasn't, but simply that muscle memory is 90% of what's going on. You are correct, though. I would suggest muscular endurance plays a bigger part though. It's really...

Re: Double bass practice idea?

It's not so much the muscular strength, but the development of muscle memory that is more important.

So adjusting your seat height is actually theoretically more likely to have a negative effect...
