Re: The Best Drummer in the World

I wouldn't say it was for nothing. All his chops are what help make his name known so he has a shot at those sessions in the first place. And those videos and clinics aren't just showing off, they...

Re: Miking demo. What do you think?

I really liked the overall vibe. The snare and bass sounded great to me. The toms were a bit weak or thin for my taste, but certainly within reason. You're getting a very Zeppelin-y sound, overall....

Re: Porting a cajon

Every one I've seen has been ported with a hole in the back. I always figured it was for accessing the snares inside if need be, and I have seen them mic'd through the hole, too.

I think you'd be...

Re: Acrolite and new emperor=broken lug

Oooof. OK, that sucks, but definitely live and learn.

Re: Acrolite and new emperor=broken lug

Just to be clear, Remo sells an Emperor snare side head, too. It is 5 mils thick. I'm not sure which one you got without a look-see.

I can easily believe it, that smooth-talking English devil.

Re: Linear "Bonham" Triplets poll and discussion

1) Right Handed
2) One of two ways
3) Mostly left hand lead, but also right on occasion.
4) a or b. I have trouble starting with the kick.

Re: Smaller thinner kicks with good sound- ideas?

EQ3 is the two-ply version of the EQ4 (one 10 mil ply with underlay), which is what I use, so I think the same discussion applies to both.

I like EMADs on larger drums, but my totally unscientific...

Re: Smaller thinner kicks with good sound- ideas?

That was recorded with the Evans batter, and the Tama Powerstroke 3 type reso. No other muffling whatsoever, not even the bubble wrap. The batter is tuned just high enough to make a nice round note,...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

Haha, Les answered before I had a chance, but that is a pretty good way to say it.

You know, it's a little like ice cream - how can you explain exactly why you like one flavor or another? You just...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

Hmmmm, not really to my taste, but if you like 'em that's all that counts.

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Hey all, I'm thinking of selling my Ludwig Classic Maples. I am the original owner, bought them new in 2011.

24X16 bass drum, 13X9 tom with Vibraband mount, 16X14 floor tom with legs. No other...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

They are one of the shops who could properly present them and sell them, I'm sure.

Sounds like fun, Sarge! Congrats!

Re: Smaller thinner kicks with good sound- ideas?

I have a standard 14X18 Tama bass drum that I think sounds fantastic, with plenty of low end.

I use an Evans EQ4 (like a Powerstroke 3) and the standard Tama reso, which is also similar to a PS3....

Re: Cool Tuning

I totally understand and agree with you. I am one who generally tunes to specific intervals, but I have heard enough recordings of my drums to know the toms are not actually producing those notes...

Re: Equal Opportunity Hands?

Interesting topic, and one I'm struggling with these days. I've played at different levels throughout my life, so I'm not going to give a simple answer.

I started 40 years ago playing strictly...

Re: Loud drums

Those kinds of tests would measure the efficiency of a drum, if you will, but not the maximum potential volume. Those may be two different things.

Re: Loud drums

Quite true. In some ways drums are very simple instruments, but we can sure introduce a lot of variables in real life applications.

Re: Loud drums

I don't know the definitive answer to your query, but I have an idea that the majority of the difference that people perceive as volume is actually the predominance of frequencies that we can hear...

Re: Ludwig floor tom leg placement?

Every eight-lug floor tom I've ever owned has had unequal spacing. as has already been pointed out, 3 legs doesn't divide evenly into 8 lugs, so they are situated to sit centered between lugs.

Re: Vinnie,Beck, Tal, Gibbons

I think that's just a reflection of the limited language skills of the poster. The choice of "Sixteen Tons" as an enticement to get out and vote would imply he is also part of the 98%, I believe.

Re: Train beat using paradiddles?

I've never tried it myself, but I saw a guy doing it the other night on a very fast version of Folsom Prison Blues and it sounded great!
