Re: Rack Toms Angled or Flat

IMO 20 inch kick makes flatter tom angles more likely. Not for me, tho, with 22” kick- I need slight angle to keep away from rim shots( I sit high and have longer than ave. arm length).

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

Lots of “sticking” advice here but short on footwork. Don’t forget to tie in your basic foot groove patterns which makes for more interdependence and syncopation possibilities with your “handiwork.”...

Re: State your unpopular drumming opinions

Most classic rockers ignore doubles, paradiddles, favoring singles. So what’s the point of learning them, if you want play in a typical cover band?

Re: If 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was released today...

It’s the rediscovery of vocal harmonies, I think, after years of shouting, screaming, talking, moaning “rock” songsters.

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

My band does covers and I need a ride for the start of one song, cowbell for two, so the ride is off my kit.

Re: Building up my weaker limbs...

Start all your useful rudiments with your left hand, over and over, until they become comfortable. Do this on a pad or snare. Then go to the kit and start fills with your left hand. You’ll find...

Re: Mounting toms on bass drum vs virgin bass drum

Kick mounted toms make for faster and easier set up for me. Positioning works for me too. Tried hanging toms but their bouncy movement and tipping stands made up my mind.
Almost forgot that not all...

Re: Extreme Volume

Maybe try to get the bass cab parallel to your kick and not “behind” or next to you.

Re: need advice- 1970 super classics

Personally I like my kick not tilted but parallel to the floor. Your short legs can be DIY project to just add rubber tips to extend the legs an inch or so. The world is full of tough, narrow,...

Re: Dodgy kick technique

I find when just practicing a pattern just fine the tough part comes when adding it to the beat or the music. Practice to a slightly slower version of the songs, slow enough to get it right, not so...

Re: Poor hand technique

I suggest staying off the pad for a bit: repititive motions are causing your elbow pain(tennis elbow) that and the arm tension and the hard pad.
I wouldn’t play on a pillow ( no useful rebound and...

Re: Counting

Mostly I follow the lyrics ( in my head!) but for the intros and strange outros/endings where I either count bars or guitar patterns, depending on which is less confusing.

Re: Rudiments.....How fast??

This is really important and a factor missed by beginners(and some advanced ) because it really involves some creative playing, more so for original music than “covers.”

Re: Rudiments.....How fast??

At one point in my drumming I had the same question. It depends on the music you play and wether it even sounds good in that context and which drums you hit. But I figured being able to play the...

Re: What is your least favorite concession you made in your set up?

I had to remove my ride in favor of a xhat, cowbell set up because all three wouldn’t fit on my right plus I realized the ride was hardly used for the music my band plays. The xhat was needed to...

I depends on your drumming goals as you get older: face up to the fact that you will learn things slower, that your fastest speeds will eventually be slower(the playable music may need to have slower...

Re: What are your favorite earplugs?

I use shooters ‘ plugs- trim the top flanges (so 2 instead of 3) and push them in 1/2 way. Depending on your ears’ inner shapes, trim them or push in a bit. Clean occasionally w. soap and water. Cost...

Re: Can’t hear my kick!

I’m thinking the loud band is trying to experiment with mics and PA and monitors to get to know what all the mixes do and transfer their knowledge to gigging settings. Figuring if they can mic...
