Re: Thought Experiment

Anything that gets you hitting the drums will help in some way. Personally, I'm not a huge proponent of drilling things like this you don't plan to use when you actually play music, but I'm not...

Re: Meet Herbert

That is a seriously cool looking machine.

I can't even put it into words fully, but man, the solid-look, the real size of it, the tasteful "patina" in the paint. It's got the appeal of a nice...

Dang, that's pretty.

Nobody else can get Gurus anymore. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Random idea of the day

Larry, I've been told I'm a weird guy. I don't often deny it, but I think some of the stuff that goes through your head is weirder than some of mine.

I would like to formally request at least...

Re: I forgot how loud drums are ! ! ! ! ! !

So here's the thing. Toms aren't "loud" in the same sense as snares or cymbals. You can still hit the toms with pretty good authority to make sure you get the "punchy" sound you want, while not...

Re: Recording to a click shenanigans

I would just keep doing what you're doing. Record stuff. Use the drums as the master track for recording bass/guitar, not the click. You might be surprised.

Re: I forgot how loud drums are ! ! ! ! ! !

I play every week in a bar at a open mic where nobody has earplugs including me. I don't like to be uncomfortable or make others be so, and I just don't hit the drums so hard.

It's really not...

Re: Recording to a click shenanigans

You need to lay down the drum track first to a click, then lay the guitar and bass over the drum track and not the click. This will bring back cohesiveness. Of course, you need to have things pretty...

Re: Bad knee on the high-hat side

I had a left knee injury for a bit and the only thing I changed was the angle od the footboard on my hat stand. Not sure if all stands can do that... I found with a steeper angle I was using less...

Re: State your unpopular drumming opinions

They can be used as a habit, but the idea is to get control of them. You should be able to place or not place ghost notes anywhere that makes sense for the song. If you're doing them simply as a...

Re: If 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was released today...

If you want you can just load the song into pro tools, setup beat detective and auto tune, then you'll know what it sounds like in "today" terms.

Re: Kick snare and hi hat.

They're just running the cables for the guitars up those stands. Makes sure they all stand in the right places and things aren't messy.

Re: Who decals their cars?

Maybe just throw on a few stickers with NRA on them along with the Ludwig stickers?

Re: Kick snare and hi hat.

Those are all killer players. Reminds me a bit of a dave weckl tune where the bass player just destroys the universe with mind bending similar poppy playing... Can't remember the name of course.

Re: Kick snare and hi hat.

Look how loose that snare batter is! You can see wrinkles in the video. Sounds nice and fat as a result.

Re: Are your bandmates interested in your drums

You just made me become a little more aware that I myself also like to suggest musical things for the melodic players to do when I hear them in my head. Perhaps I should think about those situations...

Re: Are your bandmates interested in your drums

Nobody has ever cared about what drum equipment I'm using. The closest that gets is when I get a new kit or thing they might note that it sounds "better" in a general way but they aren't usually...

Re: Sacrificing concepts during practice.

I personally think people spend too much time working on shit and honing things that they're already good at.

It will vary from situation to situation, but I think lots of players could benefit...

Re: Who decals their cars?

I was thinking the same thing about decals related to music stuff... I would think that's a prime target for criminals looking to smash/grab.

Re: Rick Beato on grid-based music (quantisation)

First; my apologies for making you feel attacked... I was responding to more than one post which I thought was equating Rick's comments simply to click recording. I like your input here and the last...

Re: Rick Beato on grid-based music (quantisation)

There seems to be some confusion... Using a click track during recording isn't what Rick is talking about here. It's the actual quantizing and snapping performances to the grid or cut/paste...

Re: 1st time playing with others

I'm floored that you were able to play/study for 50 years and even take lessons without ever playing music with someone else.

Flat out, you've been missing the real magic. Glad you're taking the...

Re: Rick Beato on grid-based music (quantisation)

Larry just playing along to a click track doesn't qualify as quantization. Digitally snapping things to a grid is what Beato is getting at. Piecing together songs on the literal on-screen grid.

Re: Rim shots- how to practice precision?

I have to echo Tony.

This is just one of those things there's no trick to. It takes muscle memory and repetition before you can do it with consistency you can rely on.

Re: Do your Toms sound bad? Here’s why.

The one in the picture is in fact really bad. Goes back.

I usually just hit them while holding the rim to see if they make a little pleasing note or just a plastic tap noise.
