Drummers Using 1 Crash

Hey all,

Does anyone know of any drummers who just used one crash cymbal in their set up?
Thanks

Levon Helm. Since the message has to be at least 20 characters, I repeat: Levon Helm.

Re: Drummers Using 1 Crash

I use 1 crash in my 2 cymbal set-up.

It's a 20" Sabian Vault Crash. The other cymbal is a 24" Giant Beat.

...this thread is probably in the wrong section.........

I sometimes use NO crash. I'm gutsy that way.

I also often don't use a single 'crash' cymbal, though I do 'crash' on my rides. So depending on how you take it, I have either zero or three crashes :)

Some guys go so far as to only use 1 cymbal. Billy Martin, for example. He rides AND crashes his cymbal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtnOF4M-SrE

I do it often. The less things I have to hit, the more creative I am with what is there.

I assume you mean one crash after a ride and hi hats, right?

John Stanier switched to one-cymbal-at-a-distance when he joined Battles

And the late, brilliant Jerry Fuchs

John Pamer from Tsunami used one crash. His setup was minimal, kind of neat, can't find a picture though. Lori Barbero from Babes in Toyland had one cymbal, period, usually broken. But there's probably about 10,000 drummers with jazz kits that do this; these are just the one's I've seen, who also have pictures on the web somewhere.

It was actually pretty common around the days of Watts and Starr to use one crash.

Look up The Ventures playing wipeout. Their drummer just use a thin ride cymbal that he also crashed on.

The days of Watts and Starr? Ringo actually used 2 crashes during the last few years of the Beatles..Those guys are still on the planet, and are still playing. They have however expanded their kits to use more cymbals.

We forgot Wailin Smash. And Swexx..as much as I love Levon,he won't be playing anything anymore.:)

back then there was no distinction between a crash cymbal and a ride cymbal......just cymbals of different sizes

I know, it is so sad. He was my biggest idol when I was a kid. I guess he's jamming with Hendrix and Clarence Clemmons in heaven now :)

Mel Taylor was the drummer who pushed me over the edge to really go with one or two cymbals.
I saw Mel on a clip and he rocked the kit so much, and just that one cymbal. That was the point when I said it doesn't matter how much stuff I use.

Cindy Blackman with Lenny Kravitz only used 2 cymbals, and I really dug that set up a lot.
I finally got brave enough to actually do it!
Patrick Keeler runs only 2 cymbals with his Greenhornes band a lot too.

Cool pic of Nick Knox.

I can't say for sure, but I'm betting his bandmates forced him to do that, because ART. The point being that he wouldn't use it unless he absolutely 100% had to. But again can't say for sure. When he was with Helmet his setup was more traditional.

I'm a huge fan of few cymbals myself. Jean-Paul Gaster of Clutch just uses a 20" or a 21" crash, a 22" ride, and a crash ride. But with so few cymbals, his sound is SO big.

I use an 18" China (live main crash) a 20" ride, and an 18" crash.
When I'm in studio I ditch the China, and the 18" crash becomes my main crash, and I put an 18" crash / ride to my right side.

I used to think more cymbals, more sound. But in the last couple of years I've tried to experiment more in bringing out the different sounds of each cymbal.

That dude gets so much out of smaller setups. He also plays them really open, I think, no real felt washers or tightened wingnuts on top. The physical size of the guy makes you think he's just going to bash them, but he's actually got a nice wristy action

Re: Drummers Using 1 Crash

Michael Tapper, drummer for Yellow Ostrich, Bishop Allen, and formerly We Are Scientists, uses just a crash and ride, and on some songs even forgoes a hi-hat, replacing it with some kind of improvised Shekere-like instrument. In most of Yellow Ostrich's first album, he doesn't even use a bass drum, as seen here.

From a MD interview (http://www.moderndrummer.com/site/20....UDvJlqDWDAk):

MD: What’s with the super-high crash?

John: I didn’t want any cymbals but the hi-hats at first. Then I was like, “Okay, I’ll use one,” but I didn’t want it near me because I’d use it too much. So I set it high so I’d have to work to get to it. I wanted it to be significant; I use it as a marker. It’s like a master reset button when I go to the cymbal. Plus, it looks cool.

He reminds me of Shooter McGavin.

Chris Cester of JET plays a set of hats and a ride... It's very simple and a good look, especially for the type of music he plays! http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/J...KUIJOdlQal.jpg

Really like the Jet photo, YD.

I have one ride that I crash a lot and one crash that I ride a lot.
