Random Thoughts

Have you ever had something on your mind that you wanted to post here, but you didn't want to start a whole new thread?

Here's where you can post that sort of thing, whatever's on your mind that you'd like to share. Something you saw today, something you realized today, photos of your kids, if your stove is broke, if you got a new car, if you've found a new hobby, if you fancy a girl, whatever in the world is on your mind, no matter how innocuous or silly it may seem to you, tell us about it. It doesn't have to have anything to do with the post above it, you don't have to respond to anything anyone writes here. This is about the random thoughts of the creative and groovy drummers here, thoughts that don't need to have anything to do with drums. Random thoughts.

I got the idea from the AAJ site, and I thought I'd try it out here.

I'll start.

Today, at the store, i noticed that the price of beef has gone up; anyway the New York strips were two or three dollars more today than they were last week, and I do love a steak.

I'm curious to see how long this can go on, but my guess is that it will disappear into obscurity in a matter of hours, if not minutes. Still, one has to try.

Here's a photo I took of my dog:

Yes, but generally because it was music or vaguely drum related.

I've immersed myself in the Olympics for the last two weeks. Every 4 years I get right into it. But the thought has struck me more than once during medal ceremonies.....just how many countries have waaaaay cooler national anthems than we do.

I mean, as much as I love being "young and free" and "girt by sea" (honestly, WTF is up with girt by sea anyway?!?!), some nations just have it when it comes to a stirring tune to get all patriotic to. Really makes me wish ours was better composed.

When I heard Queensryche was touring without Geoff Tate, and only doing their old stuff, I was intrigued.

But tickets are close to $50 with assorted fees.

$50 to see a band without the original lead singer is not happening.
$20 and I'm there. Not $50.

It's been a beautiful day in Atlanta, sunny and hot but very low humidity, a good day to take the NY Times out to the patio, sit under the umbrella and drink iced tea and and just cool out. I have a chicken in the smoker that still has a couple of hours to go, my wife is looking really pretty and the dog is wandering about in the backyard enjoying himself. Everything seems just right.

It's so hot outside that my AC is set to 77 yet my thermostat reads 85 in the house.

I actually, was more intrigued to see them WITHOUT Tate. They all have been phoning it in for a LOOONG time now and the band needed shaking up. Hopefully the new singer can help them capture some of their earlier magic again.

I agree actually. As much as it pains me to see an old favorite split like that, face it, they've been near irrelevant since Promised Land, and Geoff 's"leadership" has taken them down some bad roads and made some really bad albums.

So I was all ready and set to support the new version.

But on the principal of it, I'm not paying $50 for a non-original singer band that is only 3/5 of the original classic line up.
Not in this economy anyway.

Actually enjoying a lot of the Closing Ceremonies. Russell Brand was awesome...who knew? lol

Would have loved it if they had had Bowie live though instead of just a tribute.

Correct. I knew what it meant. It's more a question of, why?

To quote an old Billy Connolly joke.......have you ever heard anyone say "I'm sorry I was late for work, I was girt by traffic"? :-)

I just went up to a local mountain in a truck with my dog to catch a sunset. I brought some drumsticks to do rudiments on my knee whilst sitting there, looking at the sun, wondering if after a year of doing this my doubles will ever speed up, and thinking ...."does it matter"?
The truck is getting old ... 290,000 km.

My old faithful throne (28 years) was really getting tired, so yesterday I decided to build my own drum seat, inspired by the Roc-n-Soc motorbike seat from Gibraltar, I had some wood and a special dense foam material that I saved from work when they wanted to throw it away, so far it's coming on nicely, I just need a bit more experimentation with the top layer, I'm trying some different things, I don't want it too hard or too soft, I'll put some pics when it's finished.

I'm sure the headache will go away.

I like checking out a thread on this board when it first starts....then waiting 2 or 3 days and a dozen replies later to go back and check it out and see just how far off course the posts have gotten...he he. Often makes me wonder how things have gotten from Point A to Point Q.

I mean really...how does a thread that starts with rudiments end up with comments on ice cream???? (Okay, that one is partially my fault, but Henri started it!)

I love watching our drummers' minds work....

And that is my random thought for the day :)

Haha... yes, I wonder sometimes too, how did it get there...

The ice-cream posts were a good and welcome tension and release comments on a heated discussion thread, a bit of fresh air and a smile :)

Tension and release can also be applied to drumming... it's a wonderful concept.

yep, tension and release, my thought for today.

My kid started kindergarten today. Seems like just yesterday he was a baby sleeping on my lap, and I'd pass the time posting on drummerworld.com while he slept.

I don't have children, but I can imagine how...profound that has to feel.

Bummer...but "Pepper Maggot" would be a great punk rock band name.

It's coming on nicely, still a bit of work to finish it of, the amount of padding "testing" took a fair bit of time, but I'm happy with the outcome so far, it's quite a comfy seat, and hasn't cost me anything (yet), all done with "items" scattered along in my basement, it has took just a bit of time and patience :)

You obviously haven't been to Arizona much this time of year. It's monsoon season over there. Unfortunately some of it leaks over here into So Cal too.

It goes extremely quick so be sure to take video & pics. My once 3 month old just turned 4 years old and is now entering her 3rd year of preschool. It's like a flash of lightning.

Oh well, I'd hate it. The irony is that circumstances largely beyond my control have moved me into an ultra right wing suburb after a dozen years living in one of Sydney's most boho suburbs :)

This area feels a bit constrictive to me, so pristine that it feels like going to someone's house that's immaculate and you're almost afraid to sit on anything. I miss the grime and easygoing live-and-let-live vibe of my old lefty area, so I go there for coffee once a week (where the only issue is avoiding the weird old Slavic guy who goes to my favourite cafe and keeps trying to crack on to me. Must be frickin blind haha).

On the plus side, the more spacious living in Snobsville means I can now play my acoustic kit at home. Swings and roundabouts ...
