What's your other passion(s)?

1 Attachment(s)
So we know that all of us here have a passion, (or maybe some kind of weird obsession) for our drum kits and playing. The new 2 minute solo thread has given a little bit of insight as to the players personal style and maybe a hint at their personalities...so it got me to thinking, what are your other passions other than drumming? Give us another look into who you are...

Here's mine: Riding my Ninja and hanging out with all of our motorcycle buddies. I've been around motorcycles all my life and begain riding my own about 5 years ago. I'm also really into vintage cafe-style bikes and vintage flat-tracking (I don't race but have family members who do).

Anyways, that's another piece of me. I love being known as the 40-something gal who plays drums and rides a Ninja...it usually gets me a raised eyebrow or two and a lot of talk about a mid-life crisis...lol.

First and foremost....being the best father I can be to my 2 children.

My others include my job actually...I find the level of knowledge required to work in Intensive Care medicine involves a continuous quest of research, study and questions to be the best you can be.

This is the area of health care in which patients are TOTALLY dependent on your knowledge to save their lives...I couldn't ask for a more privileged profession.

I also love to watch and learn from quality documentaries...anything from David Attenborough. I just LOVE his stuff.

I've been riding for almost 20 years. Since my daughter was born, I've done a little less street riding each year, and am currently looking to liquidate my street stuff and start doing some more off road activities, Dirtbiking, ATV's, camping, etc.

My daughter (9) just enrolled in a Brazilian Jui Jitsu Program that we're going to 3 times a week. She's been the target of bullying in school for a couple years now, and has some confidence issues. I did some research and found a program designed specifically to deal with bullying. The program teaches kids "verbal jui jitsu" to stop the bullying, but if it goes to the next level, they teach them submission moves designed to take them down quickly and put into submission without violating school rules and getting themselves in trouble for fighting in the process.
She's just getting into the program and is totally into it. To be honest, seeing my daughter in her Gi, out there grappling with the boys and confidently trying to put them into submission holds makes me the happiest father on this big rock. :) :) :)

I guess you could say this is my other passion.

I started off with bass guitar and do a bit of archery, cooking, and traveling in my spare time. You could say I have a passion for learning - because I always find myself wanted to tryout new things and if they stick, they stick.

Programming (work, but it started as a hobby and I still enjoy it... usually), and video games. Although, since I started drumming 2yrs ago, I've played far fewer video games.

Love video games and I'm a self proclaimed cinema buff, watching everything from Pulp Fiction to Red Cliff to Battlestar Galactica... yeah, I watch a lot of movies. Also, I read some comics and graphic novels. Also, I recently took up paintball with a couple of my friends and its a blast!

Well, I`m a glider pilot... I`m still a beginner at it (1 year) but drumming and gliding are the things i don`t think i could live without.
Hopely this summer i`ll get my Silver C badge ! The Silver C badge is something a pilot obtains after 2 achievements: a height gain of at least 1000 m, a flight time of at least 5 hours per single flight and gliding at least 50 km. Keep in mind gliders have no source of propulsion. We use thermals for lift and try to stay airborne as long as possible. It`s sort of.. aviation poetry.
I loved aviation ever since i was a kid, and i`m planning to get a career in this domain (aviation engineer). Let`s hope i`ll make it.
Also, i am a WW2 enthusiast and militaria collector, and i wanted to take up reenactment but i don`t want to cut my hair, lol!

I don`t have pics with me actually flying , but here`s a pic of the bird i used the most this summer.

In no particular order:
  • Reading - everything from classic literature and philosophy to comic books
  • Movies - all time fave is 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'
  • Video games - Guild Wars 2 looks like a blast
  • Professional beer snob - Portland is pretty much beer mecca and getting top notch micros is like getting good BBQ in Texas; easy and abundant.

I like swimming. But by default I've become a peer counselor to others with mental illness and people that grew up in abusive and neglectful households.

I've flown a few times but soon found out that the FAA wasn't thrilled about bipolar pilots buzzing subdivisions. Wonder why? : )

ps..Flying is so much fun. The first time I lifted off the ground was a major rush. I'm sure gliding is even more fun as messerschmidtt will attest.

Nice to see i`m not the only pilot around. I`m sorry for your inability to fly anymore.
Ha, i remember my first lift, it was like a whole-body orgasm. So many new sensations and things to see and feel...
Gliding is indeed fun as hell. I think flying a powered aircraft would take away all the beauty of the simplicity of gliding ( i don`t really like the term of soaring). Technology, as in all aspects of life , ruin it, somehow. They open up more possibilities and break down pleasures.
Now everyone is navigating with fancy GPS`s and have audio variometers... where`s the fun of navigating with a map, getting lost, misjudging? We`re using our minds to create technology then get addicted to it and forget where we came from and how life was with before it...

Yeah! I thought landing would freak me out but it had my full concentration but you don't know the exact point you will lift off. I go to airliners.net a lot. Plane porn..it's so cool.

I grew up in a county of about 10,000 people but they had a very active gliders club. When we were little we would see someone pulling those long trailers and go, coooll.

People hang out at the airport in hopes they can go up with private pilots. Maybe I can call the flight school and ask some questions. Gliding above the earth in silence appeals to me. I took a hot air balloon ride once and I was in Disneyland. Unfortunately, one of the girls on board could not disguise her absolute, sheer panic. We floated over the Texas Capitol, UT football stadium, the Frank Erwin Center(coliseum for concerts etc) and I35.
I35 freaked me out some..morning rush hour.

..... and then, the big toys. 1/1 scale. They ain't cheap, but they sure are fun. My Katana, and my Iltis.

I love the classics too but I don't have the mechanical inclination needed to work on them, hence I got me a shiny new one :)

The BF has a Honda 1972 CB 750 and a Honda 1976 CB 500, both cafe'd out...real beauties and he does quality restoration. My dad owned Indians and my brother now has the 1940 suicide shift Scout, completey restored - gorgeous! He also has 7, yes 7!, 1949 Indian Arrows that he races on vintage flat-track days. Beautiful pieces of machinery. Take a look at these :)

Intereesting responses everyone. OK, so before the bikers take over this discussion here's my short list -

Running - been doing long distance runs daily and races for over 20 years. Endorphins are addicting to say the least. Like a kid playing outdoors.... Politics. First Green ever to run for state office in PA. My 2 minutes of fame. Nutrition and self-responsibility.

#1 is my lovely daughter. Sweetest thing ever.

Hans A. Muth (Target Design) styled that bike, and it appeared in the Cologne bike expo in 1980. No one thought it would be in production two years later. My Kat's a 1982 1000cc. http://www.katanacentral.co.uk/themo...background.asp While the rest of the world got 1100's, the US model was 1 liter, so it could be campaigned for Super Bike racing. Yeah, I love it.

I have many interests and hobbies.. but passion, what you call passion, only one.

My biggest passion is my football (soccer) team.

http://cache.images.soccerway.com/new/teams/2286.gif

Club Nacional de Football. (Montevideo, Uruguay)

Founded on May 14, 1899. Three times World Champion. 123 official local titles won and 21 international cups. The most succesful team in Uruguay, all-time leader of the Copa Libertadores (South America) and undeniably one of the biggest teams in soccer history.

I know soccer isn't too popular in the US, so most of you won't understand what this feels like. It is impossible to describe.

Here are some pics of Nacional's supporters receiving our team when they get in the field before the match. I don't know if there's anything like it in the States.

(Nacional's colours are red, white and blue).

And here's a little vid from the tv broadcast. If there's any soccer fans here, I think you'll enjoy it. It really is amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYxQp...eature=related

Going to the stadium and being there, with other 30, 50, 60 thousand people singing at the top of your lungs cheering for your team.. there's nothing like it.

Ok, I hope I didn't bore you, but I thought it would be nice to share this with you.

Cheers!

Listening to music :) I'm as much an audiophile as I'm a drummer (perhaps even more), music is my number one hobby. :)

I like arty things, drawings, painting, etc, as long as I'm creating something along these lines I'm a happy bunny :)

I also create CD covers to put on the media player for my compilations :)

Here's a couple of my creations :)

Chess. I've been playing chess since I was a kid when my dad taught me the game. I play online pretty much every day and I follow the top-level tournaments and matches. I'm strong for a club player, about candidate master strength, I suppose. But I'm not anywhere near world class and never will be.

Hockey. I'm really a huge sports fan in general and I follow all my local teams, but I'm a hockey and Detroit Red Wings fan, first and foremost. I'm a bit of a stats geek, too, so I follow sports from that angle as well as the competitive/human interest side of things.

Cars. I love cars. I'm from the Motor City. I grew up in an environment where family members designed, built, sold and drove cars. I love 'em.

I have too many passions to list. I wish I could retire. There are so many things I'd do with the time.

Whoa. That looks crazy good.

Okay, I gotta ask: How do you make the jalapeno poppers? Are they wrapped with bacon or something? I'm interested to know because I grow hot peppers (another passion of mine, I guess) in my garden and I've been thinking of making poppers but I assumed they need to be fried and I don't really ever fry anything. Any recipe suggestions would be appreciated, especially if it helps me make them look as good as those do!

ahhh yes... home grown peppers... THE BEST!

Core out the veins (leave some if you like it hotter). Stuff with cream cheese, wrap with strip of bacon. When your heat has simmered down to medium or so, throw'em down and turn regularly as to not burn the bacon. When the bacon is nice and brown all around set them to the side to bake (indirect heat). Usually 20-30min in a webber. The pepper will get soft when done. Let set for a few minutes and enjoy with your favorite beverage. On a side note: don't those grill marks look sexy? haha

edit: hold bacon in place with tooth picks

I've been cooking since the age of 8. One thing I've learned over the years is: the smell of BBQ drives people insane. It's like a primal call of the wild. The smell alone is euphoric. I think I'm going to start every thread from now on with a photo of my cooking; it will get more attention than my drumming that's for sure. haha
