Do you think the ends justify the means?

Yea, the title sums it up.

My standpoint on this is that if you'd have to tell a little harmless lie to help someone, then its ok. Some people just seem to use this statement in wrong style and start to abuse this fraze.

If you find yourself in a situation where you question the morality of the means to get to the ends you want:

1. Question whether or not the "ends" are worth it
2. Be more creative. Find a different "means"
3. If you are somehow responsible for the situation you've found yourself in, you need to seriously re-evaluate how you're living your life

You shouldn't have to do something you know is wrong to get what you want in life, no matter how big or small the wrong is. The only exception, of course, is when a tough choice is brought into your life from an outside source and you're left with no choice but a "wrong" one, like beating up somebody who is trying to kidnap your child.

If you're left with no choice, and it's not of your own doing, then, YES, the ends justify the means. If you have helped to create a situation where the easy way out is to compromise the honor of your own behaviors, then NO, they don't. Suck it up and live through the consequences of your foolish actions that led up to this point.

As long as you're anonymous, AXU, what is the situation?

Depends on who is helped how much by the time you reach the ends, and who is hurt how much by the means.
Basically, weigh the ends and the means, treating your own life, your family's lives and your friend's lives as any other person's.
However, the fact that I said that ^ makes me a hippocrite, but I can bet we all had times when we contradicted our own moral compass to help us, our family or our friends

Re: Do you think the ends justify the means?

This an ethics idea.

Remember that "means" have consequences that are not just the "ends" you are after.

People tend to say this when they wish to be morally tough - because they think the consequences of their actions are worth whatever hell it puts themselves or others through.

Ends DO NOT ALWAYS justify their means - it depends on the situation...

...like:

like beating up somebody who is trying to kidnap your child.

Pretty clear pattern emerging here and for obvious reasons.

How long is a piece of string?

Give me the end and the means to how you're gonna get there and I'll tell you what I think.

But to answer it as it is, then:
Yes, most definitely............No, certainly not.
And I reserve the right to decide between the two.
