Penti "Whitey" Glan

Saw no thread for this great drummer. Have the Alice Cooper "Welcome to My Nightmare" concert DVD and I just absolutely love those Camcos with the horizontal bass drums he's playing. And that 6.5x14 Aristocrat he plays just sounds awesome. Last I checked he's still playing gigs in the Toronto area.

What a Great feel, so deep in the pocket! And I love his left hand. :)

Never heard of him before; I could listen to him all day. Wow.

I either started or contributed (can't remember which) to a Whitey thread a couple of years ago. I guess it didn't get much action in the meantime, and so got deleted.

This guy was a huge influence on me back when I was a teen. Either of you heard Bush? Not the "Bush" Bush, but the Canadian band Bush featuring Domenic Troiano that put out one album in 1970. Check out the links below. Absolute freakin' awesome boogaloo shit!!!!

He was also in the band Mandala before Bush, also with Troiano.

Thanks for that clip, BonzoBonham. Whitey definitely still does have it. Jeez......

He was also Bette Midler's drummer in the 1979 movie The Rose... he played the very same horizontal double-bass Camco set in it too. Although he had added a set of Rogers Big R concert toms and swapped the 6.5x14 Aristocrat for a 5x14 Big R Dynasonic here.

Very classy drummer - tight as a fish's rectum.

Love the rhythm section of Penti Glan and badass bassist, Prakash John, on Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal live album

Check out the bass and drums during the bass solo at 2:11 ... classy stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FdWPeHFAMk

Cool track, Polly. I've been getting into Lou Reed and the Velvets over the past year or so. Really ashamed of myself that I didn't like that stuff when it first came out.

BonzBon and Polly: check out the first Bush link I posted: "Backstage Girl". Dig what Whitey's playing at about 1:30 in the drum breakdown and guitar solo. HAYSUS!

If anyone really likes the Bush stuff, I know where you might be able to find the record...

Checked that one out so far... dig the very punchy bass drum throughout. No doubt both heads are intact here.
He and Prakash made a good rhythm section duo in the 70's.

I didn't know he played on Rock n Roll Animal. So I guess I've heard him a lot :)

Band mates of mine were(are) Velvets freaks, so I got inundated with them. But don't feel bad; I think it's kind of refreshing to discover something you might have ignored in your youth. New ears and eyes make it all worthwhile!

Some screencaps of his Camcos in The Rose:

For pedals I believe he used cocktail drum pedals.
There are some good front shots in the movie of the drums and you can see how the beaters are parallel to the floor.

Some "Welcome to my Nightmare" screen grabs:

Comparing the screen caps, it seems to me between 1975 and 1978 (when The Rose was filmed) the Alice Cooper White finish has kind of yellowed a bit...

Then he's got to be real tight... ;-)

Wow, I've never seen anyone mount their kicks that way. Wonder what gave him the idea.
Looks like some big rack toms, too, like a 13 and a 14?
