Narada Michael Walden

I can't find any threads on NMW, which is weird because he plays with fantastic spirit and cooks like few others.

Here he's jamming with Jeff Beck http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgTeEHz46Xk

Recording of Eternity's Breath with Mahavishnu - one of the few players capable of seamlessly taking over from Billy Cobham http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ummV28JepgA

And my fave - tearing it up with Weather Report: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quhbvB_5JyM

It's not really Weather Report, as Wayne Shorter is missing. This concert was called Narada Michael Walden & "Former Members of Weather Report", as far as I know, and I think it was produced for the Japanese TV only.

Michael Walden is a fine drummer & producer. He did many records under his own name, and there's a few fun and catchy Disco-Funk tunes. I saw him live with Mahavishnu Orchestra many years ago (this concert was released on DVD).

That weather-report video is cooking!

Love "Visions Of the Emerald Beyond" - he plays with such drive - I prefer this to any of the other more conceived sounding Mahavishnu albums

Very surprising that there aren't more posts about MW.

In my book he is easily one of the top drummers of the past couple of decades.

He was playing in the bay area at the Keystone in Berkeley one night with a fusion group called Warriors.

His performance was nothing short of spectacular.
The best I have ever seen (and I have seen some goodies ,T Williams ,Garibaldi ,Steve Smith ,Steve Gadd).
Two hours straight of non stop genius.

Check out the newly released album

At 62, this topic can make me sentimental. I have many memories of bands, songs, drummers and riffs which remind me of a much different place in my life, but this album is in the top five for sure..

In any event catch the drums 44-45 seconds in to this one...

Ain't that the truth.

Walden has such an interesting style. It gives the impression he is playing much faster than he really is, and he does play fast, no doubt.

There is something very technical and primal going on all at once in his playing.

Black Market is one of my favorite albums, hands down.

With Jeff Beck, 2010. Three great tunes. Eternity's Breath, Stratus, Led Boots. His bass drums are just earth pounding.

I saw him with Jeff Beck. His playing knocked me out. Totally seat of the pants player. Seemed to always be going for it. That is what I want to be and see in a live drummer. I saw Ian Paice recently with Deep Purple, his playing was smooth tight, all there, but so safe it almost bored me out of the room.

This track is absolutely killer, with NMW playing drums. The band is Nova (I actually saw them supporting Steve Hillage in 1976 and they were awesome. Percy Jones from Brand X is on bass and Phil Collins is playing some percussion in there (I think).
