Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

I gotta go with Andy McKee

mediocrefunkybeat 05-06-2011 12:27 AM

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

Near enough all my favourite musicians are non-drummers. I can't say who is - it changes monthly or even daily. Today I was listening to McCoy Tyner and that was great, last week I was listening to Tetuzi Akiyama. Impossible to decide.

I don't like Andy McKee much.

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

There's so many it hardly seems fair to pick one...or two for that matter. But considering you asked, Jimmy Page and Keith Richards are the two guys that I'd sell my soul to jam with. And if I could jam with them both at the same time, then I wouldn't bother trying to steal it back.

John Martyn

He is a hugely, hugely under rated guitarist in my opinion, and phenominal writer, singer and lovely chap too. If you haven't heard of him or ever listened to any of his work, I urge you to, you won't be dissapointed :) May he rest in peace.

Toss up between Devin Townsend, Mikael Akerfeldt and Steven Wilson. All of them are mad geniuses and Mike's friends with the other two I believe...

Tossup between Miles Davis and John Coltrane...probably Miles.

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

It would be either Justin Hayward singer/songwriter/guitarist or Greg Lake singer/bass player/songwriter.

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

It varies, even within the same instrument.

A revolving list of favorites would probably include Duke Robillard, Oscar Peterson, BB King, Thelonious Monk, Paul Rodgers, Ed Roland, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Diana Krall, Jimmy Page, Sammy Hagar, Billy Sheehan, Brian Setzer, Gene Harris, Miles Davis, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and if you saw my post on the "most embarassing favorite musician" thread, Neil Diamond, to name a few.

+1

I'm gonna say Zappa counts, because his drumming doesn't hold a candle to his guitar playing. Otherwise, I'd say Les Claypool for the same reason (he plays the drums as well, but his bass skills are almost unmatched IMO.)

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

Saying favorite "non-musician drummer" is a bit redundant don't you think?
(hmm, this joke probably won't go over well in, Drummerworld.com but you know, whatever.)

Probably Mr. Fripp.
Love Adrian Belew and Todd Rundgrens intense solo efforts though, which I have a little more respect from them in a sense, since they play all of the instruments instead of one.

Re: Favorite Non-Drummer Musician??

If I had to pick just one it would probably be a 3 way tie between Santana, Hendrix or Victor Jara. Probably More towards Jara because I've been listening to his stuff more and more lately.

Chilean protest folk music from the 70's. Sort like a brown Bob Dylan that can actually sing.

Edit: In the spirit of friendship, sorry for the Dylan dig. I did just come around to Jack White though, I wouldn't use the word "genius" but I like him as a person now, so I have to hate on someone a little harder.

Jimmy Smith is undeniable in jazz.

Even the BBoys love him, since they kick it Root Down.
