Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

Man, those guys are getting more than their fair share of heavy crap. The floods were bad enough, but that Cyclone is one mother of a storm. I know we've got a couple of Queensland members. I do hope they're ok.

Anyhow what's happening folks? I was thinking these global weather events were due to climate change by whatever mechanism. Now I'm not so sure. Maybe it's a karma thing after all. I mean, c'mon, quality problems with a flagship Sonor? Something's going down!

Re: Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

From what I heard they mostly got out of it unscathed. Queensland gets cyclones every year, and despite the strength of this one, it only hit a few country towns and there have been no reported casualties yet. A fair few people have been left homeless, but not as many as were predicted.

Seemingly no casualties - if you don't count houses, trees, boats etc (pics from Brisbane Times)

Agreed! Think of all the drum gear you could buy with the insurance payout for those lovely boats! Wow.

Then every kid in Australia will have a drumkit for sure! with that insurance payout.

Sore point for many Ian......there's hoardes of people who were either not insured, under insured or the insurance co's. are using fine print (read, microscopic) as to what constitutes a "flood".....the same will follow when the full damage assesments are made after the cyclone.

The kids will be waiting a while for their new kits, I'd guess.

Thanks Zickos but Sydney's thankfully a long way from the action. Gusty is a whole lot closer to the firing line than I am.

Flooding to the south, then cyclone to the north, I'm so lucky that Noosa or the Sunshine Coast didn't get affected. The Brisbane Con, where I'm going to study next year, is right on the brisbane river but luckily didn't get too badly affected...my friend joked that the flooding was ok because only the classical section is on the ground floor :p turned out that only the underground car park was a bit damaged. The on-campus apartments I'm moving into (at a different campus) are also ok thanks to the large hill that the suburb is on. So on the whole, very lucky.

Be safe, Gust, you have a lot more drumming to do!

I'm glad there aren't too many people displaced down there. I've been glued to the news watching Egypt and unfortunately here in the States, the Australia storm took not just the back seat, but is probably not even in the car. Live well everyone!

We're used to being overlooked Bo.

What's that old saying? 90% of New Yorkers don't know there is a 'rest of America'.....and 90% of the rest of America don't know there is a 'rest of the world'. :-)

Very true, in a way it has its advantages though, regularly I get into conversations due to the fact I'm Australian because it's seen as quite novel to Americans.

Hey There,

Brisbane is on the mend, i've spent the last week ringing up QLD songwriters who were in the affected areas offering them an advance on their royalties. There have been some pretty amazing stories.

Thankfully there haven't been too many horror stories, but there are some very appreicative people out there!!

This weekend will be my fourth flood relief gig. LOTS of people donating proceeds from gigs to flood relief.

Well, Egypt is a little more significant than Australia at the moment. Our news is saturated with flood and cyclone. I think I heard 1 dead and 2 missing from the cyclone...quite sad.

Although I'm American, I would be insulted to be seen as quite novel.
I'm sure there is much more respect than that, eh?

I'm pretty easy going, I like meeting new people, if something sparks up a harmless conversation on say, a game, or a forum, it's a good thing. It isn't disrespectful to find cultural nuances entertaining.

Hey Trop, good to see you're okay - sorry for forgetting about you! How's your home?

Gusty, seems like you're super lucky, living right in between all the mayhem. Yes, they're recently reported one dead person although there could easily have been so many more.

Frost 02-05-2011 03:31 AM

Re: Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

An indirect consequence of the cyclone has been some pretty poor weather down here in Melbourne.

This is about a suburb from where I live,

http://images.whereilive.com.au/imag...e2_resized.jpg

We had about 100mm of rain in twelve hours...

Pollyanna 02-05-2011 12:58 PM

Re: Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

Hey Frosty, I take it your suburb is okay?

Pocket, if you're reading, I hope you got away with it.

In the meantime it was a scorcher in Sydney today ... 42C (about 107F), the 6th hot day in a row. It's like living in Perth or Adelaide, only more humid. It's 11pm at the moment and it's still over 34C (about 94F). Try sleeping thought that!

Sadly, we're the lucky ones ...

The smallest of roof leaks in the newly renovated part of the house Pol. I'm actually glad it's been discovered now before I paint it. Other than that, dry as a chip.

But man, didn't it rain. Monsoonal! It was literally coming in sideways. I can't recall seeing rain like that outside of the topics/sub-tropics before. And that was only the remnants of a cyclone.

Frosty....hope your feet are dry. Pol, Wy and the rest of the Sydneysiders.....time for a dip at Bondi!! :-)

Re: Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

Good to hear, Pocket. Hopefully a bit drier down there now.

It got down to 27C (80F) by 6am this morning and the mercury is rising again ... but they promise a cool change around lunchtime.

I haven't been to the beach for ages. I lost my swimming costume when I moved house two years ago and haven't bothered replacing it. The beach isn't much fun these days - hard to get a park and when you do it's usually overpriced, then the beach and water are crowded and you're stuck in the hot sun and getting sand in bad places. Bleagh. I prefer aircon and a cold shower.

I'm down with the a/c. But I'll trade you the cold shower for a cold beer!!

I married a Queenslander Pol....the beach is in her DNA. I'm forever getting dragged of to bake in the sweltering sun.

That's a bit of a role reversal, Pock - a Queenslander living in Victoria. At least it was ... after this summer I suspect quite a few of them will be moving south.

heat wave in sydney sucks man. i didn't go out of my (airconditioned) house once yesterday until about 11pm, and it was still about 30 degrees!

Re: Hey, any news from our Queensland brothers?

Just when you think we can't promote the virtues of Oz weather any further, it seems that 100 homes in Perth have been evacuated due to an out-of-control bushfire.

Hey uniin, how good was the southerly change that arrived this afternoon? The temp here dropped 10C (about 18F) in an hour and a half. I fell like I'm alive again.

Yeah Pol, home is fine but none of that heat you guys have been having, just miserable drizzling Autumn weather, in the middle of Summer, as always.

Australia needs to learn what climate means.

today was perfect weather.

cold enough to wear jeans, but still warm enough to wear shorts.

If a person had mood swings like Aust's weather of late they'd be on medication.

Agree Uniin - that's the most I've enjoyed strong cool, winds since NY Day in 2006.

Yeah, the first time I've been comfortable for a long time.

Meanwhile, poor old Perth has massive bushfire probs a week of high temps coming up.

Should move to Alice, at least the weather is consistent, plus, I don't mind the heat.
