Re: Ed Thigpen
I know I'm real late on this but...

I've been listening to the 'Oscar Peterson Trio + One Clark Terry' lately and this is a great example of Thigpen's playing. And Clark Terry ain't no slouch either. And the same could be said for Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown.

There is also a DVD out there with him instructing brushes. Haven't gotten a chance to check that out yet.

Re: Ed Thigpen
Ahh the great Ed Thigpen with one of the greatest trio's for all time. The Oscar Peterson trio was one of the most downright swingin' groups ever!
Ed Thigpen, like Fournier who we had been talking about a little in his thread, was such a brilliant brush player. He would create simple brush patterns that would just swing from here to ... wherever!
I read a great interview with him chatting about his old days back in the trio and how he and Ray Brown after each gig would go and rehearse from when they finished (maybe 2 or so I think it was) until sunrise most nights. That is some serious rehearsal. They would of had an amazing connection, through hard work as much as instinctual. They would of been damn tired to!

yes Ed Thigpen is a great great drummer ! with the brush but with sticks too ! He has a very nice feeling with the music...
I am listening his album "the sound of the trio " with oscar Peterson and I think it is a really good example of Ed's kind of playing...

Re: Ed Thigpen
I'm not completely familiar with Ed, but I absolutely LOVE his brush playing on this video http://www.drummerworld.com/Videos/edthigpenbrush.html It's my favorite brush performance video. It's not about fancy tricks or speed, it's just about feel, taste, and musicality. It makes you want to just sit down with a snare, a pair of brushes, and make music.
