80s metal band suggestions?

I have recently joined an 80s metal-influenced band. i never really got into the 80s metal scene,so i would like to get some suggestions on 80s metal bands.

preferably ones that had some skill about them.

thanks in advance.

Man that sounds like loads of fun.

I was into a lot of that stuff before I played drums when I was a guitar player so my recommendations don't come from a drumming point of view. I'd check out these for starters (it's quite a mix of styles):

Motley Crue
Iron Maiden
Scorpions
WASP
Metallica
Entombed
Bon Jovi
Megadeth
Slayer (never liked 'em but lots did and still do)
Vow Wow.

This list could go on and on!

Obviously some of them get a lot of respect drum wise though!

We have the discussion weekly at my place of employment. There were several "hair' metal bands that were actually filled with good musicians: Winger, Whitesnake, Extreme, Mr Big, of course The Scorpions. Now there all no hair metal bands. But I think in that later 80's, some frustrated musicians put together metal bands because that was the thing. You did have guitarists like Randy Rhodes, Yngwie Malmsteem and Michael Batio. And drummers like Tommy Aldrige, Rod Morgenstern and Mike Mangini.

How could I forget Extreme and Mr Big. Very good musicians. You're right about musicians doing it for the sake of it but that happens in most genres especially those mostly associated with teenagers and testosterone.

Re: 80s metal band suggestions?

Thanks for the help guys!

I rehearsed with them yesterday,and they suggested doing a few covers. so we decided to play these tracks;
anti social~anthrax
got the time~anthrax
2 minutes to midnight~iron maiden
sweating bullets~megadeth
and i convinced them to learn raining blood by slayer, purely because i love the double bass in that track.

ill try to get some recordings up of some originals for y'all.

peace,Joe

Listen to The 69 Eyes and Vains of Jenna, period.

1980's Metallica was, in my opinion, the peak of metal. Mostly post 1985 stuff, but they kicked some extreme butt. The show they did in Seattle in 1989 was in my opinion, the greatest rock concert of all time. Listen to "One" and "Master of Puppets".

I'm not going to ramble though, because as a huge Metallica fan, I could ramble on for hours.

I know what you mean, they are one of my favourite bands.
One is a real piece of work, fantastic!
the whole master of puppets album was also like a work of art I thought.
Lars may not be the most technical of drummers, but no other drummer could have filled his position,IMO.

Suggestions on 80's Metal bands...find another band...just kidding. Not my cup of tea but one of the best things about music is the diversity!!!

Good luck and have fun!

Re: 80s metal band suggestions?

DIO was one of the quintessential metal acts of the 80s. His work with Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules) is also iconic. If you want exposure to definitive 80s metal, listen to Dio.

Also:
  • Iron Maiden (an absolute must)
  • Motorhead
  • Judas Priest
  • Anthrax
  • Queensryche
  • Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads era)
  • Metallica (goes without saying)
  • Megadeth
  • Accept

If you're into the poppier/glam side of metal, there was:
  • Bon Jovi
  • Motley Crue
  • Ratt
  • Van Halen
  • Cinderella
  • Def Leppard
  • Guns 'n' Roses

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

Re: 80s metal band suggestions?

Thrash-metal and hardcore punk also had big underground presence in the 80s:
  • Suicidal Tendencies
  • Exodus
  • Slayer
  • DRI
  • Cro-Mags
  • SOD
  • The Exploited

I think early Red Hot Chili Peppers could count. Check out their really early stuff. Their first album came out in 1983, and you can tell by listening to it.

Re: 80s metal band suggestions?

It really depends on what your definition of 80s metal is. To me, Motley Crue, Scorpions, Poison, Bon Jovi, Van Halen etc were closer to the side of glam than metal. For me, definitive 80s metal bands were Metallica and Megadeth, with some Slayer and Anthrax thrown in. Gunners would also be a contender, although once again more a kin to the rock bands of the era rather than metal. If you own these albums.

Master of Puppets - Metallica
Rust In Peace - Megadeth
Arise - Sepultura
Seasons in the Abyss - Slayer
Painkiller - Judas Priest

Youll have a pretty good idea of 80's metal right there!
