Jason McGerr

One of my new favourite drummers ladies and gents! I have really gotten into Death Cab for Cutie as of lately and one thing that has always floored me about this band, other than Gibbards exceptional writing, is McGerr's drumming on their albums. His sound, his style and feel is amazing and his drumming is perfect for the style and he plays for the song everytime! Not flashy, doesn't over-play, fits the song perfectly.

One question........WHY doesn't he have a page of Drummerworld?

Since I noticed that our guituar player is a huge Death Cab for Cutie fan I have also gotten into their music. I love Jason`s playing generally, whether with Tegan and Sara, Death Cab for Cutie etc. Always groovy and so unique.
I think that Jason got really popular through his Modern Drummer Day performance.
Funny thing, when I saw his Modern Drummer Day clip I first got interested in his playing...two weeks later our guitar player mentioned Death Cab for Cutie.

Here are two nice Jason videos:

That's exactly how I discovered him. I absolutely LOVE his playing -- not too little, not too much...just right. I wish they added more of his playing to the DVD though.

Anyway, I ran out and bought the complete set of Paiste Giant Beats after watching the MD video. Now Jason's switched to Paiste Twentys! :)

My wife just bought me the MD festival 2006 and I was thoroughly impressed w/ Jason and his drumming. Just excellent. I love his rudimental skills and his overall approach and attitude. I've always liked Death Cab but now I have a whole new respect for the band.

It makes me miss my Ludwig kit! Now all I can think about is running out and getting a big Luddy 26" kick!

His Purdie Shuffle is just as smooth as can be on "Grapevine Fires". What a great song, too.

Such a tasteful drummer. That is a wicked shuffle in Grapevine Fires.

Jason is a good drummer who plays what is necessary for the music. Anyone notice that he plays traditional grip in the "Soul Meets Body" video? I was watching it the other day and noticed it.

Here is a link.

His shuffle on Grapevine is not exactly a traditional shuffle.

He demonstrates and explains it here:

I must say I got even more respect for Mr. McGerr after watching this clip video.

Hope you guys enjoy!

Very original drummer. I'm glad to hear that this is the next single. It was an immediate standout in my book. It's cool to see him getting the respect that he is here on the forum.

I'm a big fan of both Jason's drumming style and attitude. I love what he does with the brushes in Brothers on a Hotel bed.

I just recently heard of this drummer. Does he play the Ludwig maple classic or the Legacy classics?

Yeah, jason is the man, i love his playing it is so tasteful, its just what the song orders. His shuffle in Grapevine Fires is pretty wicked. I didnt know he drummed for tegan and sara, but i always liked the drums on their albums. Cheers

Even thought I personally am not a huge fan of Death Cab for Cutie, Jason deserves some serious props, I love how he breaks down the flam threes, fours etc and then puts them in a groove.

Both. He sometimes uses his 60 something ludwigs, but I think live he uses the legacy. That groove on grapevine fires is amazing and he plays the shuffle unlike anyone else i've ever see. He uses the open foot hat chick as part of his doubles.

I agree.

His playing and sound is great. The pocket on I Will Posses Your Heart is a mile wide. The track on Meet Me at the Equinox is killer too.

Jason kinda has that Steve Jordan effect. He can just sit back and play a groove for three to four minutes and it sound amazing! I enjoy watching him play.
