"America's Got Talent" Not Kind to Drummer.

I was watching "America's Got Talent" and one of the contestants was a drummer. He just started to play his solo and soon got three strikes from the judges and was done. The crowd also booed him only seconds into the solo. He did play too fast and was not very musical but still they didn't give him much of a chance.

The question is can a drummer win a talent competition like "America's Got Talent" by just soloing or will he/she be done before they start?

Re: "America's Got Talent" Not Kind to Drummer.

I just watched it on YouTube. He has no business behind a kit and got what he deserved. Pitiful.

But to answer, I believe a drummer could win if they actually PLAN and REHEARSE their solo, and if it has some appeal to a crowd. Keep in mind these shows have no mental value. It's bad enough that American Idol exists.

He was kinda on the right track with the extinguishers but I agree, not a very good performance from what was aired. A percussion act would have to be very interactive and visual to last on that type of show.

Shows like this are ridiculous. Everything that happens on them is carefully scripted. This guy didn't have a chance, and he knew it. He was put on the show for comic relief...something for the audience to hiss and boo and throw tomatoes at. In fact, I'm glad this guy humiliated himself on national TV because he portrayed drummers as attention-seeking morons. Good riddance.

Even if he did do well, they can't market a solo drummer can they?

I remember a kid many years ago on that Kid show with Ed McMahon and he was very good and got great lauds. This guy was a bit of a jerk.

I wouldn't go as far as to call him a "jerk", but his commanding personality definitely turned me off.

As much as I hate those shows, I think you have the title quite reversed. If he was 20 and at a death metal show, then maybe the smoke and double pedals would be ok; but in my general argument, such drummers do not have, or chose not to display their talent, and this guy certainly did not here either. While humorously painful, he definitley did not command any more respect than he was given based on that performance.

Watched the video and concluded he's a nut. The main reason for watching this type of show is Schadenfreude anyway, and he certainly provided that.

Chip Ritter was on Letterman, but he had to juggle stix too!! Awesome performance Chip!
MOST folks wouldnt know a great drummer if it bit them...they all think Ringo is a great drummer [sorry Bernhard] but even Gadd would get booed off a mainstream talent show....ppl dont understand...Buddy managed to 'crossover' and be an entertainer but most drummers aint gonna achieve this [I recorded 'WipeOut' and sold a few thousand units, but Bozzio plays it with his feet and has sold none!] The 'general public' has no concept of either drumming talent or any other kinda talent...just look at the clowns who win these shows...

lol yea i wouldn't call him a jerk either, he was just really over-confident, he probably knew most people don't know much on drums, and thought and if he did anything they would be impressed...didn't work i guess

good mics

anyway, I watched that video. I was really puzzled that the guy even played drums. I really just "hit things" and we know as drummers...we don't just "hit things" Good drummers make music.

Re: "America's Got Talent" Not Kind to Drummer.

Thanks for the responses. Yea this was just comic relief unfortunately. The guy really wasn't that good but I did like his kit.

I just wondered if a really good drummer would even have a shot a winning a talent competition like this? You could be as good as Rich or Bellson and probably not win. Just playing a straight solo would not be entertaining enough. I think you would need some gimmick like setting your sticks on fire or something wild like that.

Its not like people who see this will be like "oh, all drummers must be like him".

But he really annoys me.

I would definitley not call him a jackass young sir. He actually seems like a pretty nice guy to me. He just figured his ability to put on a "show" would be good enough to please the judges rather than give a "real" drum solo.

Re: "America's Got Talent" Not Kind to Drummer.

Seems like a confident and nice guy, but his "extreme percussion" should be called "extremely lame percussion". Though the crowd was booing really fast. It's probably scripted, like burnthehero suggested.

Call him what you want but his attitude was great, despite being booed and cutoff. It's the people that really stink then have this awful, defensive stance, and language. Kudos to him for just having fun with it, no matter how bad he may or may not be.

See theres the problem. "America most Favorite Person Show"" doesnt want to see a solo drummer. Thats what the media tells the average "TV" watcher. I ve often wondered how shows from the '80s(facts of life, growing pains, etc..) have been a staple of modern programming, but G-forbid a drummer wants to show his/her talent on national television and gets turned into "comic relieve" for the *masses*. As much as I love my country, and as bad as this kid might be, I am equally embarrased by the way we categorize things..... I digress.... sorry....;its just kind of frustrating....

Anyone think that maybe he intentionally put on a risibly lackluster performance to take the p*** out of the people who watch reality TV crap such as "America's Got Talent", who are generally morons anyway?

If he did, I dont think many viewers would have realized it.

Life is rigged and that show is no different. America is comprised of bad taste sprinkled with occasional talent. I can't belive this act didn't make the cut:
