Favorite Bass Players

We all have our favorite drummers. But, some of us play different instruments besides drums. Therefore, one tends to have favorite players of that instrument.

For you bass players out there, who is your favorite bass players?

Tell us:
Who they are
Whatever band they play in
What style they have
Why you like them
How they influenced you

And if you want, show us some videos, songs, or whatever about them.

Here's mine:
ryan martinie
mudvayne
funk, slap bass
he has definetely a revolutionary bassist in metal with his uber complex basslines. he makes the songs more "interesting". he is known for flicks and a flemenco style, not normally found in metal. he's also awesome at bass chords.
well, he hasn't influenced me playing-wise, but he sure has influenced me to push my musical boundries and combine styles of music.

An old rocker. ANDY PYLE

Blodwin Pig in the 70's & then Wishbone Ash (& other various) together with sessions.Still playing.
Just stands relaxed, often leaning on his stack, playing with fingers, the most amazing running bass lines.
Would love to play a gig with that guy.

Re: Favorite Bass Players

Hey, great thread and my 2nd most favorite topic!

First, I shall bow & kneel to the Gods before I go any further.

Jaco Pastorius * Ron Carter * Charlie Haden * Stanley Clark.

That out of the way, there are some greats in no particular order:

James Jamerson
( The king of R&B..one of Jaco's inspirations )

Hadrien Feraud ( watch out for this kid, he's the Tony Williams of electric bass.. hear him with John MacLaughlin )

Victor Wooten ( we all know him )

Adam Nitti
( Killer 6 string virtuoso )

Gary Willis
( A pfatter groove isn't possible, hear him with Tribal tech.. watch his left leg as he plays..funny as heck )

Paul McCartney ( lost a lot of money to a one legged chick recently )

Jack Bruce
( an essential 1/3 of super group Cream.. he & Eric hated each other )

Oteil Oubridge ( Another 6 stringer redefining bass playing )

Gary Peacock ( The ultimate acoustic trio player. Helped DeJohnette sound as good as he did... a Zen master too )

Matt Garrison
( Another young monster with great genes.. hes the son of Coltrane's bass player Jimmy Garrison.. hear him with Scott Kinsey)

Re: Favorite Bass Players

Really liking Tony Levin during his King Crimson days ('Discipline' basically) his phrasing is what I most admire. It's really something quite unique. I like Colin Greenwood as well for his beautifully understated bass parts; quite in contrast to his brothers' lead guitar!

I like John Entwistle from the who.

Re: Favorite Bass Players

Stephan Lessard: Dave Matthews Band

His talent and ability to read and write music has inspired me for nearly 2 decades now. He was only 16 when he was asked to join the DMB and that alone speaks volumes. While most would only think of the work he does with the DMB, his heart and soul is entrenched in hard rock & metal music. Most don't get to see that side of Stephan's writing, but if one searches it out.. its out there for those that are curious.

Diversity is encouraging to me from the standpoint of musicianship. Stephan has never dissapointed.

Re: Favorite Bass Players

I really dig Paul Jackson actually - he's such a spot on bassist and grooves like hell. You gotta love Bootsy as well - especially his stuff with James Brown like Superbad and Sex Machine of course.

As for jazz - I think Ron Carter is just the most beautiful bassist and Gingerbread Boy of Miles Smiles has the most awesome bass at the end where it's just him and Tony..
Paul Chambers just had groove and I think he was quite ahead of his time and the same goes for Jimmy Garrison - especially with his soloing with the pauses in his phrasing and such..

Interestingly I read an interview with Ron Carter on the net once and he was talking about playing with Elvin (on The Real McCoy) and said it took Elvin a while to get used to him as Elvin was very headstrong and so was Ron, which lead him to say that Garrison wasn't that authoritive (in comparison to him anyway). It made me think actually - anyone agree or disagree with Ron?

Oo - just found the interview: http://thebadplus.typepad.com/dothem...iew_with_.html

Re: Favorite Bass Players

I'm not a bass player, but my favourites are Hunter Burgan from AFI, Flea from the Chilli Peppers, and Davy de Wit, who is the head of the pop academy here in Enschede. I havent heard him play much, but what I've heard was very impressive and he's a very nice guy too. Here's HisSpace ;), for those who are interested.

Hello, colleagues.

My favourite bass player is John Entwhistle - The Who, he was static, emotion-less but a tornado with his hands and fingers.
Other: Ian Hill/Judas Priest, Steve Harris/Iron Maiden, Geezer Butler/Black Sabbath, Lemmy Ian Kilmister/Motorhead, Cliff Williams-AC/DC, Sean Yseault/White Zombie.

Thanks & Regards.

Yep, Bootsy, Jackson, Ron, Chambers and Garrison are amazing. Especially Garrison and Chambers. But then I am in love with all things Coltrane.

I would also add Larry Graham the groove master, Victor Wooten (bit obvious I guess but his ability is incredible), Flea (Older Chili's - it was more real. The early 90's stuff was packed with groove though - just not a fan of anything since One Hot Minute), all types of Stanley Clarke bass playing, Miroslav Vitouš (Now he sings now he sobs is amazing in every way) and I almsot forgot Jaco (his work on Heavy Weather is spot on).

I belive that roger waters is a great bass player, love that relax style, but as a musician he really wise, the man know's a lot. But about bass execution, expresion and feeling John Paul Jones make's me crazy and his so low profile. Love Geddy Lee to, he have a unique sound ( maby the fender jazz b that he plays or maby the strings, maby both)

I'm really into Richard Davis at the moment. Really liking his explorative nature into sounds and rhythms on the bass, moving away from some of the more straight ahead techniques. Love his stuff with Dolphy, Andrew Hill and Roland Kirk.
Cecil McBee has reallly caught my ear too - especially on Thembi by Pharoah Sanders. The track 'Love' is such amazing bass playing.

Merlo? From Jack Johnson? That guy is awesome! I saw him in a show and he randomly broke out rapping on one song and it was awesome.
Also, I like Christian Mcbride, Jimi Jazz from G. Love and Special Sauce, Jaun Nelson from Ben Harper, played this breakdown live that was awesome, and shannon Birchnell (sp?) from John Butler Trio.

Cliff burton all the way, because he was a geniune bass, player he once said that he 'd be the best bass player in the whole world, he said that because of his brother who recently at that time died..forget about all that headbanging on stage and s*** the man got definitely INSANE rhythms and sounds.

my favorites would be:

Geddy Lee - Just such a musically talented bassist. A genius. Rush legend.
John Entwistle - If he's not on your list...you shouldn't have one. The Who legend.
Cary Ziegler - Local bassist(Maryland) Phenomenal player. Crack The Sky's best ever!
Brian Bromberg - Jazz great, and only stand-up player on this list. Incredible bassist!
Steve Harris - Iron Maiden's legendary basser. Just so damn fast and clean. Wheww...
Stanley Clarke - Jazz legend. Maybe the greatest ever. Smooth, stylish and fast!
Billy Sheehan - Up there with SH as a rock bassist. Seen him twice. My jaw still hurts!
Victor Wooten - The modern-day Stanley Clarke, but with his own style. Can play anything quick, clean, and with so much style and feel. Wow!
John Myung - Just listen to any Dream Theater song. And check him out in the dvds. This guy is just sick. You know this guy practices. Amazing! And that Chapman Stick...WOW!

That's my favorites as of now. I just love these players! Amazing talent.
