does anyone have any thoughts on this band? i personally like them quite a bit since they brought something new to the metal scene. now i'm not a big fan of metal but they have an awfully nice groove going on with some nice time signatures.

A friend sent me Cote and Themata, which I quite liked.

Yeah, I've been a big fan of Karnivool for 4 or so years now. I have Persona and Themata records, and they have a new one in the pipeline.
They're an Australian band from Perth. Ian Kenny, the singer, has another band called Birds Of Tokyo who are fantastic too; much straighter rock as opposed to Karnivool's groove metal, but fantastic in their own right.

Themata was released in 2005 and Persona a year or two before that, so they're been around for a bit.

Also check out their cover of Gotye's The Only Way; very cool song.

A lot of their stuff isn't in tricky time signatures, it's just the drummer playing with the beat and creating a feeling of odd time. The 'odd time' bit in Cote is just three bars of 4/4 and then one bar of 3/4, but he plays some weird beat displacement shit that makes it seem whack.
Tasty drumming. Drums for Themata were recorded by the guitarist.

Check 'em out:

I also strongly recommend you take a listen to Cog if you like Karnivool, and if you like Birds of Tokyo, have a listen to The Butterfly Effect

I know Drew from Karnivool fairly well (The scraggly haired guy in the middle of the above photo). He's always beena very fwd thinking person with a great attitude and appreciation for everything. Karnivool also work very hard at what they do. Best of luck to them!
