Rare Earth

I went to post on the Rare Earth Forum but it didn't work for me, I saw STICKY on there so perhaps he or someone else can answer a question I have had since 1969, I have a new pressing of Get Ready the album and it sounds great of course; but is it live or in the studio?
Back in the day I assumed it was live but my system is quite revealing and it sounds very studio. Anyone know for sure? I love the drum solo which is really more a drummer playing solo if you know what I mean.

Re: Rare Earth

I'll assume it's a studio recording http://www.superseventies.com/1970_3singles.html "Their first album release was, as before, built around Motown gold. The band decided to reinterpret "Get Ready," which had been a Top 30 hit for the Temptations in 1966. On July 4 at 1 a.m., Rare Earth began recording, and when they were through, they had stretched the song to twenty-one and a half minutes. It took up the entire second side of that first album, issued in the fall of 1969."

Re: Rare Earth

On my copy there are sounds of an audience and thank you's at the end but I always thought it sounded cheezy, but not enough to take away from the superb playing. Thanks for the info.

Re: Rare Earth

Not having that album/CD in my collection, hard to say. I remember listening to it "back in the day" however. Used to be common practice for a lot of bands to record in the studio "live" with 1 shot, no overdubs, and even to go so far as to import audience noise onto the album. And perhaps, in this case, is where the "cheese factor" comes from.

Re: Rare Earth

I just saw this thread and can tell you that the audience sound on Get Ready was indeed "fake." I have a few versions of that song, the long, 21:30 (LP) version mentioned that had the "fake crowd" & two 45 Versions, which were much shorter & used by radio stations for their play lists and was actually listed on their internal playlists, well, at least two of the Detroit Stations (WKNR & CKLW) had them called out as, "45 Version without fake crowd." & "45 Stereo Version." The shorter, 45 versions, came in at right about 3 minutes even..........

For those interested in such things, here's how we in Michigan knew Rare Earth before they became Rare Earth.
